Burnie
Burnie is a port city on the north-west coast of Tasmania, Australia. When founded in 1827, it was named Emu Bay, being renamed after William Burnie, a director of the Van Diemen's Land Company, in the early 1840s. , Burnie had an urban population of 19,550. Burnie is governed by the City of Burnie local government area. Economy The key industries are heavy manufacturing, forestry and farming. The Burnie port along with the forestry industry provides the main source of revenue for the city. Burnie was the main port for the west coast mines after the opening of the Emu Bay Railway in 1897. Most industry in Burnie was based around the railway and the port that served it. After the handover of the Surrey Hills and Hampshire Hills lots, the agriculture industry was largely replaced by forestry. Burnie City Council (or City of Burnie) is a Local government in Australia, local government body in Tasmania, located in the city and surrounds of Burnie, Tasmania, Burnie in the north-west of the state. The Burnie local government area is classified as urban and has a population of 19,348, which also encompasses Cooee, Tasmania, Cooee, Hampshire, Natone and Ridgley. History and attributes The municipality was established on 6 January 1908. Originally named Emu Bay, the name was changed to Burnie in 1931 following a petition from residents to name the council based on the town it was centred on. Burnie became a city council on 26 April 1988. The city's motto is "non nobis solum" (not for ourselves alone); for many years this was on the council seal but in 1992 a new, more colourful logo was created that did not include the motto. Electoral District Of Burnie
The electoral district of Burnie was a single-member electoral district of the Tasmanian House of Assembly. It centred on the town of Burnie on Tasmania's northern coast. The seat was created in a redistribution ahead of the 1903 state election from parts of Waratah and West Devon, and was abolished when the Tasmanian parliament adopted the Hare-Clark electoral model in 1909. South Burnie
South Burnie is a locality and suburb of Burnie in the local government area of City of Burnie, in the North West region of Tasmania. It is located about south-east of the town of Burnie. The Bass Highway passes from south-east to north-west along the shore of Bass Strait, which forms part of the northern boundary. The Emu River forms part of the eastern boundary. The 2016 census determined a population of 331 for the state suburb of South Burnie. History The municipal area of City of Burnie, of which South Burnie is part, was proclaimed a city on 26 Apr 1988. It was previously named Emu Bay Municipality. The municipality and the bay to its north were named for the Emu River, which was named in 1827 for emu tracks seen in the vicinity. HMAS ''Burnie'' (J198/B238/A112), named for the city of Burnie, Tasmania, was one of 60 ''Bathurst'' class corvettes constructed during World War II and one of 20 built for the Admiralty but manned by personnel of and commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Entering RAN service in April 1941, ''Burnie'' saw action during World War II, and was decommissioned on 5 July 1946. The corvette was sold to the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) five days later, was renamed HNLMS ''Ceram'', and remained in service until 1958. Burnie is the mascot of the Miami Heat, the NBA basketball team. Burnie is a rough, anthropomorphic depiction of the fireball featured on the team's logo. Appearance The Burnie costume is a full-body suit. The body is orange fur, with orange feathers for hair. The "nose" is a green basketball. Burnie wears number 0 (or 00) for the Heat, typically in a black uniform, although he has also worn the Heat's red and white jerseys during playoff promotions.
