Burley Bearden
Burley Lewis Bearden (August 28, 1917 – January 18, 1997) was an American football coach. He served as the head football coach at the University of Texas at Arlington from 1966 until 1970, compiling record of 27–24. Waxahachie ( ) is the seat of government of Ellis County, Texas, United States. Its population was 41,140 in 2020. Etymology Some sources state that the name means "cow" or "buffalo" in an unspecified Native American language. One possible Native American origin is the Alabama language, originally spoken in the area of Alabama around Waxahatchee Creek by the Alabama-Coushatta people, who had migrated by the 1850s to eastern Texas. In the Alabama language, ''waakasi hachi'' means "calf's tail" (the Alabama word ''waaka'' being a loan from Spanish ''vaca''). That there is a Waxahatchee Creek near present-day Shelby, Alabama, suggests that Waxahachie shares the same name etymology. The 1970 Texas–Arlington Rebels football team was an American football team that represented the University of Texas at Arlington in the Southland Conference during the 1970 NCAA College Division football season. In their fifth year under head coach Burley Bearden, the team compiled an 0–10 record. After the conclusion of the season on December 9, head coach Bearden resigned to take a position as an assistant professor within UTA's physical education department. The 1970 season also marked the final UTA competed as the Rebels before transitioning to the Mavericks for their 1971 season.
