Charge Of Burkel
The cavalry charge of Burkel (french: Charge de Burkel, nl, Slag bij Burkel) was a skirmish between Belgian and German forces on 19 October 1918, during the closing stages of World War I. It is notable as the last cavalry charge in Western Europe. Background The Belgian Cavalry Division was stationed on the Western Front as an infantry formation, with its horses kept near the front for supply purposes. By October 1918, the Belgian army was advancing back into territory that it had lost in 1914 and the German front line began a fighting withdrawal eastwards. By the 18 October, the 5th Belgian Division had reached Bruges and the 7th Belgian Infantry Division had captured Oostkamp. The Cavalry Division, which had been ordered to attack Eeklo, was held back by the destruction of bridges at Ruddervoorde, and was instead ordered to take up position behind the 1st Belgian Infantry Division slightly west of Ruddervoorde. Victor Van Strydonck De Burkel
Lieutenant-general BEM Victor Jean Clement, ''Baron'' van Strydonck de Burkel (16 July 1876, Antwerp – 4 August 1961, Etterbeek) was a general of the Belgian Army and the primary architect of the formation of the Free Belgian Forces after Belgium's official surrender on May 28, 1940 in World War II. Military career First World War and Interwar In 1918, as an officer in the 1st Regiment of Guides, Victor van Strydonck commanded the last cavalry charge in western Europe, the successful Charge of Burkel. For his role in the charge, van Strydonck was made a baron and given the title "de Burkel" in 1937 after the location of the battle. A cavalry officer, van Strydonck de Burkel commanded the Cavalry School (1920–1923) and the 1st Cavalry Division (1928–1933), served as the inspector-general of the Belgian Gendarmerie (1933–1939), and was the commander of the Cavalry Corps (1933–1939) prior to World War II. Heinrich Bürkel
Heinrich Bürkel (1802–1869) was a German genre and landscape painter Life Bürkel was born in 1802 at Pirmasens, in Rhenish Bavaria. He was designed for trade, but devoted every spare minute to drawing. His father's house, being an inn, presented him with subjects in great variety, and so early as his eleventh year he came into conflict with the police on account of a caricature of Napoleon. At fifteen he entered the law, but at twenty he was incited to turn to art, and learned the technicalities of oil painting among friends at Munich, Schleissheim, and in the Netherlands. In time he took to depicting popular and military scenes, cattle, and landscapes, especially winter landscapes. He spent from 1823 to 1832 in Rome, and became on his return a popular artist, famous for his imagination and humour. He was an honorary member of the Academies of Munich, Dresden, and Vienna.
