Burke Shadow Ministry
The Burke shadow ministry was a Shadow Cabinet led by the Opposition Leader and leader of the Labor Party, Brian Burke, in the Parliament of Western Australia. While serving no formal status—only the Leader and Deputy Leader received remuneration for their role over and above that of a Member of Parliament—it was intended to improve the effectiveness of the Opposition by providing an alternative Ministry to voters, consisting of shadow ministers who could ask role-specific questions in parliament, provide comment to the media and offer alternative policies to the government in their areas of responsibility. The Burke shadow ministry existed from September 1981, after Burke's party-room defeat of then leader Ron Davies, until the 1983 state election at which Labor entered government and formed the Burke Ministry. Ken McIver
Kenneth Finlay McIver (26 October 1928 – 23 September 1988) was an Australian politician who served in the Parliament of Western Australia between 1968 and 1988. He represented Northam and Avon for the Labor Party. Prior to entering politics, McIver spent over 20 years as a train driver with the Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR). When the Fremantle line reopened in 1983, McIver drove the first passenger train along the line with Premier Brian Burke in the driver's cab with him. Mike Barnett (politician)
Michael Barnett AM (born 24 January 1946) is a former Australian politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1974 to 1996, representing the seat of Rockingham. He served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 1986 to 1993. Barnett was born in Belper, Derbyshire, England, and briefly attended Trescobeas County Secondary School (in Falmouth, Cornwall). His family migrated to Western Australia in December 1958, and settled in Pinjarra, where he attended Pinjarra High School. Prior to entering politics, Barnett was the owner of a caravan park in Rockingham, one of Perth's southern suburbs. He joined the Labor Party in 1970, and at the 1974 state election successfully contested the newly created seat of Rockingham, narrowly defeating the Liberal candidate. Barry Hodge
Barry James Hodge (born 16 February 1944) is a former Australian politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1977 to 1989, representing the seat of Melville. Hodge was born in Melbourne, but moved to Perth with his family as a child, where he attended CBC Fremantle before going on to Perth Technical College. After leaving school, he worked as a broadcasting technician at various local radio and television stations, including 6IX, 6PR, and TVW. Hodge joined the Labor Party in 1965, and subsequently became involved in the union movement. Bob Pearce
Robert John Pearce (born 24 February 1946) is a former Australian politician, who was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1977 until 1993 representing the seats of Gosnells and Armadale. Biography Pearce was born in Perth to Ronald Malcolm Pearce, a professional fisherman, and Betty Pearce (née Crain). He was educated at Bayswater Primary School. During a three-year stay in Tasmania he attended Hobart High School for years 8–10, returning to Western Australia and Governor Stirling Senior High School for years 11 and 12 in 1962–1963, serving as school captain in his final year. He then completed a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Western Australia (UWA), and a Diploma of Education at Claremont Teachers' College, graduating in 1969. Hywel David Evans AM (20 December 1924 – 3 September 2019) was an Australian politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1968 to 1989, representing the seat of Warren. He was a deputy leader of the party on two occasions, and was a minister in the governments of John Tonkin and Brian Burke. Early life Evans was born in Penygraig, Glamorgan, Wales, and came to Australia as a child. His family settled in Pemberton, a small town in the South West, and he went on to attend Bunbury High School. Evans enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in January 1943, and saw service as a warrant officer in New Guinea and the South-West Pacific. Minister for Lands is a position in the government of Western Australia, currently held by John Carey of the Labor Party. The position was first created in 1870, under the name Commissioner of Crown Lands, at a time when Western Australia was still a British colony and had not yet achieved responsible government. Exception for a brief period between 2001 and 2003, it has existed in every government since then.
