Burke's Backyard
''Burke's Backyard'' was an Australian gardening and lifestyle series presented by horticulturist Don Burke, broadcast on both radio and television. On television, it was a regular weekly series on the Nine Network from 12 September 1987 to 26 November 2004. History The program began on the Sydney AM radio station 2UE on Saturday and Sunday mornings before being picked up by the Nine Network in late 1987. Channel 9 broadcast the show on Friday evenings for the next 17 years. It is currently being broadcast on radio by 2UE and syndicated stations on Saturday and Sunday mornings. A magazine of the same name as the television program was published as a merchandising tie-in by Australian Consolidated Press. Donald William Burke (born 16 July 1947) is an Australian television presenter, television producer, author and horticulturist. He is best known as the longtime host of ''Burke's Backyard'', a lifestyle program produced by his wife's company CTC Productions which ran for 17 years from 1987 to late 2004 on the Nine Network. He was also responsible for the creation of garden makeover program ''Backyard Blitz'', starring former colleague Jamie Durie. Career In 2004, ''Business Review Weekly'' listed Burke among its top 50 entertainers list, saying he earned an estimated A$7.2 million in 2004. ''Hot Property'' is an Australian real estate Channel Seven show that has aired since 1999. The program is hosted by actor Michael Caton. The half-hour show looks at problems Australians face when wanting to buy, build, renovate or rent homes. After a year off in 2006, the show returned in July 2007 on Sunday nights at 7pm. ''Give Me a Home Among the Gumtrees'' (or ''Home Among the Gumtrees'') is a popular Australian song written in 1974 by Wally Johnson and Bob Brown (aka Captain Rock). Bullamakanka were an Australian country music trio formed in 1978. The band toured extensively throughout the 1980s and their distinctive melding of Australian bush music with American bluegrass gained them a large following. In 1986, Rex Radonich died in a car accident and Rod McCormack joined the band. The band's single, "Home Amongst the Gum Trees", brought them a considerable measure of crossover success. Giaan Leigh Rooney, OAM (born 15 November 1982) is an Australian former competitive swimmer and television personality. As a member of the Australian team in women's 4×100-metre medley relay, she won an Olympic gold medal and broke a world record at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Rosemary Alison Stanton (née Finley) (born 5 June 1944, Sydney, New South Wales) is an Australian nutritionist and dietician, known for her media appearances. Biography Stanton has been called "the first 'celebrity' dietitian". As of 2018, Stanton had written 33 books, including several textbooks, many scientific papers and over 3500 articles. She has been a regular guest on many TV programs, including The Investigators and the Checkout (ABC) and was a presenter on Burke's Backyard.
