Bunker (Berlin)
The Bunker (also ''Reichsbahnbunker'') in Berlin-Mitte is a listed air-raid shelter. Originally based on plans of the architect Karl Bonatz, it was constructed in 1943 by Nazi Germany to shelter up to 3,000 Reichsbahn train passengers. The square building has an area of and is high; its walls are up to thick. There are 120 rooms on five floors. In May 1945, the Red Army took the building and turned it into a prisoner-of-war camp. From 1949, it was used to store textiles and from 1957, as storage for dry and tropical fruit. Bunker Berlin
A bunker is a defensive military fortification designed to protect people and valued materials from falling bombs, artillery, or other attacks. Bunkers are almost always underground, in contrast to blockhouses which are mostly above ground. They were used extensively in World War I, World War II, and the Cold War for weapons facilities, command and control centers, and storage facilities. Bunkers can also be used as protection from tornadoes. Trench bunkers are small concrete structures, partly dug into the ground. Many artillery installations, especially for coastal artillery, have historically been protected by extensive bunker systems. Typical industrial bunkers include mining sites, food storage areas, dumps for materials, data storage, and sometimes living quarters. Olafur Eliasson
Olafur Eliasson ( is, Ólafur Elíasson; born 5 February 1967) is an Icelandic–Danish artist known for sculptured and large-scale installation art employing elemental materials such as light, water, and air temperature to enhance the viewer's experience. Cerith Wyn Evans
Cerith Wyn Evans (born 1958 in Llanelli) is a Welsh conceptual artist, sculptor and film-maker. In 2018 he won the £30,000 Hepworth Prize for Sculpture. Early life and education The son of Sulwyn and Myfanwy Evans, Evans was born in Llanelli. He was educated at Ysgol Gymraeg Dewi Sant, Llanelli and at Llanelli Boys Grammar School. His father was a noted photographer and painter. Evans is a fluent Welsh speaker. Evans completed a foundation course at Dyfed College of Art (1976–77), and later studied at Saint Martin's School of Art (1977–80), while working as an invigilator at the Tate, and the Royal College of Art (1981–84). Tea Jorjadze Thea Djordjadze ( ka, თეა ჯორჯაძე; born 1971 in Tbilisi, Georgia) is a contemporary artist based in Berlin, Germany. She is best known for sculpture and installation art, but also works in a variety of other media (drawing, painting, printing, performance, video, music). Ai Weiwei (, ; born 28 August 1957) is a Chinese contemporary artist, documentarian, and activist. Ai grew up in the far northwest of China, where he lived under harsh conditions due to his father's exile. Santiago Sierra (born 1966) is a Spanish artist, known for performance art and installation art. Much of his work deals with the topic of social inequities. He lives in Madrid. Monika Sosnowska
Monika Sosnowska (born 7 May 1972 in Ryki) is a Polish installation artist. In 2003, she received the Bâloise Prize at Art Basel as well as the Polityka's Passport award given by Poland's most prestigious weekly. Life and career Sosnowska studied at the Painting Department of the University of Fine Arts in Poznań (1993–1998), and the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam (1999–2000). During her final years at the Poznań academy, she found that the "painting started to escape her canvas." She began to create works that played with both two-dimensional painting and three-dimensional space, finally giving up on canvas altogether and instead using space itself as a sort of three-dimensional painting. Sosnowska treats space as a medium for her works, always designing projects to fit into a specific space. Anselm Reyle (born 1970) is an artist based in Berlin. He is known for his often large-scale abstract paintings and found-object sculptures. Biography Anselm Reyle was born in Tübingen, Germany in 1970. He studied at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Stuttgart and at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Karlsruhe. He moved to Berlin in 1997 where he founded a studio cooperation with John Bock, Dieter Detzner, Berta Fischer and Michel Majerus.
