Bundesautobahn 143
is an autobahn in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The A 143 comprises the western leg of the ''Mitteldeutsche Schleife'' (Central German Loop), a beltway around the cities of Halle an der Saale and Leipzig. 9 km of the planned 22 km route have been completed, due to the autobahn's path potentially disturbing an environmentally sensitive area. History After reunification, the A 143 was one of the first projects to begin planning under the new government. The A 143 project was placed under top priority in the ''Bundesverkehrswegeplan'' (Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan) of 1992, and the original plan was for at least part of the highway to open within a year. However, the A 143's path goes through an environmentally sensitive area, part of which is protected by the Habitats Directive. The southernmost 9 km was not built and opened until July 11, 2005. Great Crested Newt
The northern crested newt, great crested newt or warty newt (''Triturus cristatus'') is a newt species native to Great Britain, northern and central continental Europe and parts of Western Siberia. It is a large newt, with females growing up to long. Its back and sides are dark brown, while the belly is yellow to orange with dark blotches. Males develop a conspicuous jagged crest on their back and tail during the breeding season. The northern crested newt spends most of the year on land, mainly in forested areas in lowlands. It moves to aquatic breeding sites, mainly larger fish-free ponds, in spring. Males court females with a ritualised display and deposit a spermatophore on the ground, which the female then picks up with her cloaca. Halle-Neustadt
Halle-Neustadt (; popularly known as ''HaNeu'' , like Hanoi) was a city in the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). It was established as a new town on 12 May 1967, as an independent and autonomous city. The population in 1972 was 51,600 and in 1981 was more than 93,000. On 6 May 1990, Halle-Neustadt merged back into Halle again. The population has halved since then and was about 45,157 inhabitants on 31 December 2010. European Polecat
The European polecat (''Mustela putorius''), also known as the common polecat, black polecat, or forest polecat, is a species of mustelid native to western Eurasia and North Africa. It is of a generally dark brown colour, with a pale underbelly and a dark mask across the face. Occasionally, colour mutations including albinos, leucists, isabellinists, xanthochromists, amelanists and erythrists occur. The Habitats Directive (more formally known as Council Directive 92/43/EEC on the Conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora) is a directive adopted by the European Community in 1992 as a response to the Berne Convention. The European Community was reformed as the European Union the following year, but the directive is still recognised. The Habitats Directive required national governments to specify areas that are expected to be ensuring the conservation of flora and fauna species.
