Buddy's Pony Express
''Buddy's Pony Express'' is a 1935 Warner Bros. ''Looney Tunes'' cartoon, directed by Ben Hardaway. The short was released on March 9, 1935, and stars Buddy, the second star of the series. Summary The film opens to a lawless town in the Old West; at a saloon, Buddy plays the piano. The bar is tended by a pig, and a dog patron quickly becomes incapacitated by liquor. Cookie the serving girl sings "Oklahoma Joe". In a gunfight, one patron's head is obliterated, only to the revelation that it is a large mask worn by Buddy, who is taking part in the musical number. A lantern then falls on his head. A dog man enters, and posts, on the wall, an announcement: "Notice! Pony Express Race from Red Gulch to Skull Crick & back -- Mail Contract awarded to winner - Race Starts 2:30 to-day!" All run off to prepare. Ben Hardaway
Joseph Benson Hardaway (May 21, 1895 – February 5, 1957) was an American storyboard artist, animator, voice actor, gagman, writer and director for several American animation studios during The Golden Age of Hollywood animation. He was sometimes credited as J. B. Hardaway, Ben Hardaway, B. Hardaway and Bugs Hardaway. He fought in World War I in the 129th Field Artillery Regiment, Battery D. Army service Hardaway was enlisted in World War I on June 4, 1917, and was discharged on April 9, 1919, a total of 26 months. He was led in the 129th Field Artillery Regiment by future president Harry S. Truman, in which he attended his reception planned by Forrest Smith at the Shoreham Hotel in 1949 and his inauguration, following him being re-elected. The last 14 months of his service were served in France. Pony Express
The Pony Express was an American express mail service that used relays of horse-mounted riders. It operated from April 3, 1860, to October 26, 1861, between Missouri and California. It was operated by the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company. During its 18 months of operation, the Pony Express reduced the time for messages to travel between the east and west US coast to about 10 days. It became the west's most direct means of eastwest communication before the first transcontinental telegraph was established (October 24, 1861), and was vital for tying the new U.S. state of California with the rest of the United States. Despite a heavy subsidy, the Pony Express was not a financial success and went bankrupt in 18 months, when a faster telegraph service was established. Summary We come to a balloon, in which float Buddy and several animals, including an elephant, a lion, and a bear. Buddy looks through a spy-glass to see a sign that says "Buddy's Circus will arrive at 2:00 P.M." Checking his watch, Buddy sees that the time is nigh: he releases from his arms a gaggle of stakes, which land perfectly in a circle completed by the sign, and which are hammered into the earth by an octopus, which then is flattened by the landing balloon, which seamlessly morphs into a circus tent. Two men set up walls outside the tent, and one of them begins welcoming patrons to the show. Leonard Michael Maltin (born December 18, 1950) is an American film critic and film historian, as well as an author of several mainstream books on cinema, focusing on nostalgic, celebratory narratives. He is perhaps best known for his book of film capsule reviews, ''Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide'', published annually from 1969 to 2014. Early life Maltin was born in New York City, the son of singer Jacqueline ( née Gould; 1923–2012) and Aaron Isaac Maltin (1915–2002), a lawyer and immigration judge. Maltin was raised in a Jewish family in Teaneck, New Jersey. He graduated from Teaneck High School in 1968.
