Bucyrus Township is one of the sixteen townships of Crawford County, Ohio, United States. As of the 2020 census the population was 821. Geography Located in the southwestern part of the county, it borders the following townships: * Holmes Township - north * Liberty Township - northeast corner * Whetstone Township - east * Dallas Township - southwest * Tod Township - northwest Most of the city of Bucyrus, the county seat of Crawford County, is located in northeastern Bucyrus Township. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. It is a type of gazetteer. It was developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the United States Board on Geographic Names (BGN) to promote the standardization of feature names. Bucyrus, Ohio
Bucyrus ( ) is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Crawford County, located in northern Ohio approximately 28 miles (45 km) west of Mansfield and southeast of Toledo. The population was 11,684 at the 2020 census. The city is the largest in Crawford County, and the center of the Bucyrus Micropolitan Statistical Area (as defined by the United States Census Bureau in 2003). History The origin of the name Bucyrus is not certain. It was given by Col. James Kilbourne, who laid out the town in 1821. One theory is that the name Bucyrus is derived from "beautiful" coupled with the name of Cyrus the Great, founder of the First Persian Empire. An alternate theory is that the city was named after Busiris, a city of ancient Egypt.
