Buckhall, Virginia is an unincorporated community in the census-designated place (CDP) of the same name, in Prince William County, Virginia. Its population of was 20,420 as of the 2020 Census. Demographics As of the 2020 census, there where 20,420 people and 5,353 households. Origins It is where the remnants of the original small town are now, that Buckhall School (formerly Oak Hill School) a one-room school house, was built in 1865, around which the village then grew up. Adjacent to the site of the school, a general store was built, which was gutted by a fire on August 21, 2007. By October 2008, however, refurbishment of the Buckhall store had been completed, and it re-opened under new management. The Buckhall Church (now Buckhall United Methodist Church) was built (ca. 1905) nearby, beside what is now Prince William Parkway, and still stands as of 2015. Dumfries, officially the Town of Dumfries, is a town in Prince William County, Virginia. The population was 4,961 at the 2010 United States Census. Geography Dumfries is located at (38.567853, −77.324591). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.6 square miles (4.1 km2), all of it land. The town is situated 70 miles north of the state capital, Richmond. It is 30 miles south of central Washington, D.C. History The history of Dumfries began as early as 1690 when Richard Gibson erected a gristmill on Quantico Creek. A customhouse and warehouse followed in 1731, and many others cropped up along the estuary by 1732. Centreville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States and a suburb of Washington, D.C. The population was 73,518 as of the 2020 census. Centreville is approximately west of Washington, D.C. History Colonial period Beginning in the 1760s, the area was known as Newgate due to the popularity of the conveniently located Newgate tavern. William Carr Lane operated the tavern and was co-proprietor of a nearby store with James Lane, Jr. The Lanes sold convicted servants, which may explain why the tavern had the same name as a London prison. The small stream that passed near the tavern was named the River Thames, another London association. Lee Highway
The Lee Highway was a national auto trail in the United States, connecting New York City and San Francisco, California, via the South and Southwest. After receiving a letter on January 15, 1919, from Dr. Samuel Myrtle Johnson of Roswell, New Mexico, David Carlisle Humphreys of Lexington, Virginia, put out a call for a meeting in Roanoke, Virginia, to form a new national highway association. On December 3, 1919, five hundred men from five states met in Roanoke to officially form the Lee Highway Association. The auto trail was named after Robert E. Lee.
