Buck Creek (Mississippi River)
Buck Creek is a small tributary of the Upper Mississippi River flowing mainly through Garnavillo and Jefferson Townnships in Clayton County, Iowa, to join the Big River at Bussey Lake, a backwater lake approximately two miles above Lock and Dam No. 10 at Guttenberg, Iowa. The Army Corps of Engineers is working to reduce erosion problems in the creek's drainage. Clayton County maintains a park on the creek. Buck was so named in 1837 when a pioneer shot a deer there. The Upper Mississippi River is the portion of the Mississippi River upstream of St. Louis, Missouri, United States, at the confluence of its main tributary, the Missouri River. Clayton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 17,043. Its county seat is Elkader. Guttenberg, Iowa
Guttenberg is a city in Clayton County, Iowa, United States, along the Mississippi River. The population was 1,817 at the time of the 2020 census, down from 1,987 at the 2000 census. History Prairie La Porte, meaning "the door to the prairie," was the first name given to Guttenberg by French explorers in 1673. The Guttenberg area was a site of Sac and Fox campgrounds until 1823. The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 transferred ownership to the United States and the Black Hawk Purchase of 1833 finally opened the area for legal settlement. Guttenberg’s past is preserved today in the many limestone buildings built by German immigrants in the mid-to-late 19th century.
