Arthur Buchwald (October 20, 1925 – January 17, 2007) was an American humorist best known for his column in ''The Washington Post''. At the height of his popularity, it was published nationwide as a syndicated column in more than 500 newspapers. His column focused on political satire and commentary. Buchwald had first started writing as a paid journalist in Paris after World War II, where he wrote a column on restaurants and nightclubs, "Paris After Dark", for the ''Paris Herald Tribune''. He was part of a large American expatriate community in those years. After his return to the United States in 1962, he continued to publish his columns and books for the rest of his life. He received the Pulitzer Prize in 1982 for Outstanding Commentary, and in 1991 was elected to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, in addition to other awards. Manuel Buchwald, (born June 7, 1940) is a Canadian geneticist and academic. Born in Lima, Peru, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree ''summa cum laude'' in 1962 from Dartmouth College and a Ph.D. in 1967 from Brandeis University. He was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. In 1971, he joined the Hospital for Sick Children as a staff geneticist. In 1970, he was appointed scientist and in 1980 became a senior scientist. In 1996, he was appointed senior scientist and director of the Hospital for Sick Children's Research Institute. He also holds the Lombard Insurance Chair in Pediatric Research. His research interests are human molecular genetics, Fanconi anemia, cystic fibrosis and gene cloning and function. Charles von Buchwald (22 October 1880 in Bjerringbro, Viborg municipality, Viborg – 19 November 1951 in Hørsholm) was a Denmark, Danish amateur football (soccer) player, who played seven games as a Defender (football), defender for the Denmark national football team. Harold Buchwald, (February 22, 1928 – April 17, 2008) was a Jewish-Canadian lawyer. He was involved in various royal commissions on tax reform legislation and has lectured on corporation law and consumer protection. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to a Jewish family, the son of Frank Buchwald and Bessie Portigal, he received a BA in 1948, an LL.B in 1952, an LL.M in 1957, and an honorary LL.D in 1994 all from the University of Manitoba. He was admitted to the Manitoba Bar in 1952. In 1965 he formed the firm Buchwald Henteleff with Yude Henteleff. His firm later merged with several other firms and is now known as Pitblado LLP.
