Bráulio Mantovani
Bráulio Mantovani (born July 1963 in São Paulo) is a Brazilian screenwriter and author. Career Graduating in Portuguese Language and Literature from the PontifÃcia Universidade Católica de São Paulo, he began his career writing professionally for theatre groups in 1987. Before becoming a writer, Mantovani was an amateur actor working in plays, training he later said was crucial in helping writing characters. In the early 1990s, he moved to New York City where he worked as camera operator and assistant director for Zbigniew RybczyÅ„ski. Back in Brazil, he wrote the script for the short film ''Palace II'', directed by Fernando Meirelles in 2001. During the next year, the partnership extended to '' City of God'', which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. ''Cidade dos Homens'' (English title: ''City of Men'') is a Brazilian television show created by Kátia Lund and Fernando Meirelles, the directors of the film '' City of God''. The series was watched by 35 million viewers in Brazil and was released internationally on DVD shortly after the film. The São Paulo Prize for Literature () is a Brazilian literary prize for novels written in the Portuguese language and published in Brazil. It was established in 2008 by the Secretary of Culture for the State of São Paulo. Though not as old as other literary prizes in Brazil, such as the Machado de Assis Prize, the São Paulo Prize has quickly risen in prestige. For example, in 2011, there were 221 submissions for the prize. This rapid rise in popularity is partly because of the large cash prize. Every year two prizes of R$200,000 each are awarded—one for the best novel of the year by an established author, and the other for the best novel of the year by a debut author—making the São Paulo Prize the largest prize for a published work in Brazil, and one of the largest literary prizes in the world.
