Brynmawr
Brynmawr (; , ,) is a market town, community and electoral ward in Blaenau Gwent, Wales. The town, sometimes cited as the highest town in Wales, is situated at above sea level at the head of the South Wales Valleys. It grew with the development of the coal mining and iron industries in the early 19th century. Until the reorganisation of local authorities in 1974, Brynmawr was administered as part of the county of Brecknockshire. Welsh language According to the 2011 Census, 6.0% of the ward's 5,530 (332 residents) resident-population can speak, read, and write Welsh. This is above the county's figure of 5.5% of 67,348 (3,705 residents) who can speak, read, and write Welsh. The Redlands Unified School District serves the cities of Redlands and Loma Linda, the unincorporated community of Mentone, the eastern half of Highland and a small section of San Bernardino in San Bernardino County. Bryn Mawr (1901 – 1923) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse is best known for winning the 1904 Preakness Stakes. He was bred by Goughacres Stud in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, owned by B. F. Clyde and his brother William's son, Thomas C. Clyde. They would race him under their Goughacres Stable. Bryn Mawr was sired by Atheling and out of the mare Maggie Weir, a daughter of The Bard. Preakness Stakes The twenty-ninth running of the Preakness Stakes was run on Saturday, May 28, 1904. On that day Bryn Mawr went off as the heavy favorite at 3-2 in the field of ten after three colts scratched. Bryn Mawr (better known as 71st and Jeffery) is a station on the Hyde Park/South Chicago branch of the Metra Electric Line. It is located at 71st Street and Jeffery Boulevard, which is away from the northern terminus at Randolph Street Station. In Metra's fare-based system, Bryn Mawr Station is in zone 2. , Bryn Mawr is the 201st busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 73 weekday boardings. The station is named for the former name of the neighborhood at the time the line was built, when it was part of Hyde Park Township. Bryn Mawr is an 'L' station on the CTA's Red Line. It is located at 1119 West Bryn Mawr Avenue in the Bryn Mawr Historic District of the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The adjacent stations are Thorndale, located about one half mile to the north, and Berwyn (temporarily closed), about three eighths of a mile to the south. Four tracks pass through the station, but the two western tracks are currently out of service for reconstruction. There is an island platform in the center of the tracks (currently only the western side of the platform is in use) and a side platform adjacent to the western track; Purple Line weekday rush hour express service pass through the station on the same tracks used by the Red Line but do not stop. History The first section of the Merthyr, Tredegar and Abergavenny Railway from Abergavenny to Brynmawr was opened on 29 September 1862. Bryn Mawr (pronounced from Welsh for "big hill"), formerly Nahant, Redlands Junction and West Redlands, is a formerly unincorporated community in San Bernardino County, California, United States, annexed by the city of Loma Linda. As of 2000, its population numbered 213. Bryn Mawr is bordered on the east by Redlands. History Originally named Nahant in the 1880s, the community was renamed Redlands Junction after a Southern Pacific Railroad depot was built in the town, accompanying the railroad through nearby San Timoteo Canyon. To avoid being confused with nearby Redlands, the name was replaced with Bryn Mawr, and the depot added a post office in 1895.
