Brymbo Institute Cricket and Football Club was a multi purpose sports club based in Brymbo, Wales. History The club has its roots in the establishment of the Brymbo Institute and Reading Room, set up by non-conformist and Victorian industrialist William Darby. It was not as successful as he hoped, as few steelworkers were teetotalers, whilst the Darbys were great supporters of the temperance movement and so banned the sale of alcohol from their premises and land. At the 2001 Census, the population of the community area (including Brymbo village, along with the villages of Tanyfron and Bwlchgwyn and a number of rural hamlets) was 3,482, increasing to 4,836 at the 2011 Census. John Matthias (born 1878) was a Welsh international footballer. He was part of the Wales national football team between 1896 and 1899, playing 5 matches. He played his first match on 29 February 1896 against Ireland and his last match on 18 March 1899 against Scotland. Jack Newnes
Jack Newnes (6 June 1895 – 3 February 1969) was a Welsh professional footballer who played as a half-back. He played amateur football while working as a collier and a steel worker prior to entering professional football with Bolton Wanderers in 1922. He went on to play almost 150 matches in the Football League for Bolton, Nelson and Southport, before moving into non-league football in 1928. Newnes spent several years in the non-league game and represented a number of clubs around Manchester. He won one cap for the Wales national football team in 1926. Biography John Newnes was born on 6 June 1895 in the village of Trefnant, near St Asaph, Denbighshire. Before becoming a professional footballer, he worked in the steel industry and as a coal miner.
