Bryden Road District
The Columbus Near East Side District is a historic district in the Near East Side of Columbus, Ohio. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. A portion of the district, the Bryden Road District, was added to the Columbus Register of Historic Properties in 1990. An addition, the Columbus Near East Side Historic District-Parsons Avenue, was added to the register in 1983. The Columbus Public Health building, the former Engine House No. 12 and Fair Avenue Elementary School, Franklin Park, and the Franklin Park Conservatory all lie within the National Register district. Columbus () is the state capital and the most populous city in the U.S. state of Ohio. With a 2020 census population of 905,748, it is the 14th-most populous city in the U.S., the second-most populous city in the Midwest, after Chicago, and the third-most populous state capital. Franklin Park Conservatory
Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is a botanical garden and conservatory located in Columbus, Ohio. It is open daily and an admission fee is charged. Today, it is a horticultural and educational institution showcasing exotic plant collections, special exhibitions, and Dale Chihuly artworks. The conservatory contains more than 400 plant species. Biomes representing global climate zones include: Himalayan Mountains, Tropical Rainforest, Desert, and Pacific Island Water Garden. Additional plant collections include a Bonsai Courtyard, Showhouse with seasonal displays, orchids and tropical bonsai collections, and Palm House with more than 40 species of palms. Charles Frederick Myers House
The Charles Frederick Myers house is a historic private residence in the Franklin Park neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. The house was built in 1896 in an eclectic style. It was added to the Columbus Near East Side District (part of the National Register of Historic Places) in 1978, and the Bryden Road District (part of the Columbus Register of Historic Properties) in 1990. Design The Charles Frederick Myers house was built in an eclectic style, including elements of Romanesque Revival, neo-French provincial, and Queen Anne architecture. It was among the most ornate houses built in the city in the 19th century, built on Bryden Road (one of three streets in Columbus where the grandest houses were built, along with East Main and East Broad). It is one of the largest and most ornate houses on the street and in the Bryden Road District. The architect is unknown, though is suspected to be a work of architect Joseph W. Joseph Warren Yost House
The Joseph Warren Yost House is a historic house in Columbus, Ohio. It was added to the Columbus Near East Side District (part of the National Register of Historic Places) in 1978, and the Bryden Road District (part of the Columbus Register of Historic Properties) in 1990. The house was built c. 1895 for Joseph Warren Yost, a prominent Columbus architect, who also designed the house. The building has rich decorations and detail, including a combination of stone, brick, and terracotta, as well as French-inspired bellcast roofs. The home's design has numerous similarities to the Charles Frederick Myers house, situated on Bryden a few blocks to the east, and presumably also designed by Yost. Franklin Park (Columbus Park)
Franklin Park is a public park in Columbus, Ohio, United States. It is the namesake of Franklin Park, its containing neighborhood in Columbus. The park is a landmark for both the neighborhood and the Near East Side. The park encompasses filled with several ponds, an amphitheater, terraced waterfalls, a community garden, an Asian-themed garden, a picnic shelter, and playgrounds. The Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens also lie within the park, a landmark of the neighborhood and the City of Columbus. Franklin Park is home to twenty one cherry trees gifted from Japan to represent Japanese community of Columbus, Ohio. Twenty of the trees are being kept inside the conservatory's greenhouse before being transplanted outside. The remaining older tree was planted along one of the lakes in Franklin Park on April 27, 2012. Fair Avenue Elementary School
The Fair Avenue Elementary School is a historic school building in the Franklin Park neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. The building contributes to the Columbus Near East Side District, on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in the Richardsonian Romanesque style in 1890, having been designed by prolific Columbus architect Frank Packard. The building, originally housing a school as part of the Columbus Public School District, currently houses one of three campuses of the A+ Arts Academy. History The Fair Avenue School was built at a time of significant population growth in Columbus. Following the American Civil War, an influx of new residents led the school board to construct new schools nearly every year. The Fair Avenue School was built from 1889 to 1890; contracts were let in 1889 and architect Frank Packard was chosen to design the building.
