Bryan D. Spinks
Bryan Douglas Spinks FRHistS (born 23 December 1948) is Bishop F. Percy Goddard Professor of Liturgical Studies and Pastoral Theology at Yale Divinity School, the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, and Berkeley Divinity School. He is a British priest in the Church of England and officiates in the Episcopal Church (United States), Episcopal Church in the United States. Life He was born in Braintree, Essex and lived in Black Notley, Essex, where he attended Black Notley Church of England Primary School; Endsleigh School, Colchester; and Braintree County High School. Spinks attended St Chad's College, Durham, St. Chad's College at the University of Durham where he earned an honours Bachelor of Theology, Theology degree in 1970 (Class 2, Div. 1) while studying under Canon Arthur Couratin. He also earned a postgraduate diploma in Theology with distinction on a Lightfoot Scholarship. The Royal Historical Society, founded in 1868, is a learned society of the United Kingdom which advances scholarly studies of history. Origins The society was founded and received its royal charter in 1868. Until 1872 it was known as the Historical Society. In 1897, it merged with (or absorbed) the Camden Society, founded in 1838. In its origins, and for many years afterwards, the society was effectively a gentlemen's club. However, in the middle and later twentieth century the RHS took on a more active role in representing the discipline and profession of history. Current activities The society exists to promote historical research in the United Kingdom and worldwide, representing historians of all kinds. Its activities primarily concern advocacy and policy research, training, publishing, grants and research support, especially for early career historians, and awards and professional recognition.
