Brutus Hamilton
Brutus Kerr Hamilton (July 19, 1900 – December 28, 1970) was an American track and field athlete, coach and athletics administrator. Biography Hamilton was born in Peculiar, Missouri, and grew up on a farm next door to the Harry S. Truman family farm. In the Missouri State High School championship meet in 1918, he won the high jump, pole vault, broad jump, and shot put. After that, he went on to the University of Missouri, where he won the U.S. decathlon and pentathlon championships in 1920. This qualified him for the U.S. Olympic team. At the 1920 Summer Olympics he won the silver medal in the decathlon, losing to the Norwegian Helge Løvland by only four points, and finished sixth in the pentathlon. He placed seventh in the pentathlon at the 1924 Summer Olympics. Besides athletics Hamilton was a second-string end on the 1921 Walter Camp All-American football team, and in 1923 he played on the Kansas City Athletic Club basketball team that won the National AAU Championship. ... Peculiar, Missouri
Peculiar is a city in Cass County, Missouri and is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area within the United States. The population was 4,608 at the 2010 census. The town motto is "Where the 'odds' are with you." History Early settlers of the town came to Western Missouri by riverboat from Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Peculiar also had families coming from Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia.http://www.cityofpeculiar.com On July 29, 1868, the county surveyor, Robert Cass, platted Peculiar and was filed as "The Town of Peculiar". There are at least two versions of the story on how Peculiar received its name. The first involves the community's first postmaster, Edgar Thomson. Donald Paul Bowden (born August 8, 1936) is an American middle-distance runner. He competed in the 1500 m at the 1956 Summer Olympics, and in 1957 became the first American to run a mile within four minutes. National Track And Field Hall Of Fame
The National Track and Field Hall of Fame is a museum operated by The Armory Foundation in conjunction with USA Track & Field. It is located within the Armory Foundation (the former Fort Washington Avenue Armory) at 216 Fort Washington Avenue, between 168th and 169th Streets, in Washington Heights, in the New York City borough of Manhattan. Dave Maggard
Dave Maggard (born January 12, 1940) is an American former Olympian and university athletic director. Maggard, who grew up in San Francisco and Turlock, California, graduated from University of California-Berkeley. He is a former member of the U.S. National Track Team and secured a spot for the 1968 Summer Olympics during the 1968 Olympic Trials. Maggard finished 5th in the shot-put at the 1968 Olympics. Maggard served as head track coach at Sunset High School in Hayward, California from 1964 to 1966, athletic director at the University of California, Berkeley from 1972 to 1991, the University of Miami from 1991 to 1993, and the University of Houston from 2002 to 2009. Forrest Beaty
Forrest Orren Beaty (born September 5, 1944) is a retired American track and field athlete memorable for setting the National High School record in the straight 220 yard dash, a race slightly longer than the 200 metres straight. It is the longest standing record on the books, although mostly because that distance is not run anymore. His record time, set on a cinder track in 1961 as a high school junior at Herbert Hoover High School in Glendale, California was hand timed at 20.2 and equaled the world record for the imperially measured distance. Later in his high school career, he also set the record for the 100-yard dash at 9.4, just .2 off the world record in that event. He was also spectacular on the football field for the school.
