Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust
The Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust (abbreviated BTLT) is a volunteer-run conservation group based in Brunswick, Maine, United States. Established in 1985 and funded by its members, it owns many preserves and trail networks, and has assisted in the creation of town-owned parks and preserves. The trust, one of eighty land trusts in Maine, covers the towns of Brunswick, Topsham and Bowdoin. The trust's executive director is Steve Walker, while its president is Emily Swan. Brunswick is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 21,756 at the 2020 United States Census. Part of the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford metropolitan area, Brunswick is home to Bowdoin College, the Bowdoin International Music Festival, the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum, and the Maine State Music Theatre. Maine Land Trust Network
The Maine Land Trust Network (abbreviated MLTN) promotes discussion among the eighty Land trust, land trusts in Maine, United States. It was established in 1995. As of 2023, MLTN members have conserved over of land, maintain over of Trail, hiking trails, and provide over 340 water access points. MLTN members protect 61% of the state's land area. Topsham, Maine
Topsham () is a town in Sagadahoc County, Maine, United States. The population was 9,560 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Portland– South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area. The town is home to the annual Topsham Fair. History Called Sawacook, the area was territory of the Pejepscot Abenaki Indians, a subtribe of the Anasagunticooks (now Androscoggins), who controlled the Androscoggin River. They lived and fished at Pejepscot Falls. But a plague, probably smallpox brought by Europeans, decimated the tribe's population in 1615–1616. On June 16, 1632, the area was granted by the Plymouth Council to Thomas Purchase and George Way, later acquired by Richard Wharton and then, in 1714, by the Pejepscot Company. Bowdoin, Maine
Bowdoin is a town in Sagadahoc County, Maine, United States. The population was 3,136 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Portland– South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area. History Bowdoin was part of a tract of land extending from Merrymeeting Bay to the Androscoggin River that was conveyed in 1752 by the Kennebec Company to William Bowdoin of Boston, older brother of James Bowdoin. Originally called West Bowdoinham Plantation, it was settled some years before the Revolutionary War. In 1773, William Bowdoin died, and by 1779 James Bowdoin had legal claim to the area and was granting deeds. Crystal Spring Farm is a historic farm property at 277 Pleasant Hill Road in Brunswick, Maine. The property has an agricultural history dating to the early 19th century, although most of its buildings are now of mid-20th century origin. The property is now owned by the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust (BTLT), and is operated as a community farm. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Maquoit Bay
Maquoit Bay is a bay in Cumberland County, Maine, in the northern part of Casco Bay. It is located between South Freeport and Mere Point, Brunswick, and is a Focus Area of Statewide Ecological Significance and one of the state's Important Bird Areas. The mouth of Maquoit Bay faces southwest, which results in its becoming a receptacle for nutrients flowing in from Casco Bay. The mixing of these nutrients with the organic material of the bay's salt marshes, a process assisted by the tides and the confluences of surrounding watercourses, creates a rich environment for marine life. On top of the large amounts of shellfish, the bay is also home to thousands of waterfowl, wading birds and shorebirds all year round. Pennellville Historic District is a residential district located in Brunswick, Maine. To locals, the neighborhood is known simply as "Pennellville." Pennellville is significant for two main reasons: it has several historic ship captains' mansions, and much of the real estate is waterfront property.
