Bruno Kernen (born 1972)
Bruno Kernen (born 1 July 1972 in Thun, Canton of Bern) is a former Swiss alpine ski racer. In 1997, he became world champion in downhill, as well as a silver medalist in combined. In 2003, he won bronze in downhill at the world championships in St. Moritz. He won the Lauberhorn downhill race in Wengen in 2003. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Kernen won a bronze medal in the downhill. He also raced in the super-G Super giant slalom, or super-G, is a racing discipline of alpine skiing. Wengen
Wengen () is a mountain village in the Bernese Oberland of central Switzerland. Located in the canton of Bern at an elevation of above sea level, it is part of the Jungfrauregion and has approximately 1,300 year-round residents, which swells to 5,000 during summer and to 10,000 in the winter. Wengen hosts the classic Lauberhorn ski races of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup in January. History Wengen was first mentioned in official documents in 1268, and the origin of the name is unknown. Alpine Skiing Combined
Combined is an event in alpine ski racing. A traditional combined competition consists of one run of downhill and two runs of slalom, each discipline runs on separate days. The winner is the skier with the fastest aggregate time. (Until the 1990s, a complicated point system was used to determine placings in the combined event.) A modified version, the super combined, is a speed race (downhill or super-G) and only one run of slalom, with both portions scheduled on the same day. History The first World Championships in 1931 did not include the combined event, but it was added to the program in 1932. Alpine skiing at the Winter Olympics was not included until 1936, and the combined was the only event. Alpine Skiing At The 2006 Winter Olympics – Men's Super-G
The Men's Super-G competition of the Torino 2006 Olympics was held at Sestriere, Italy, on Saturday, February 18. In super-G competitions, skiers must navigate between gates at high speed, and the gates are further apart than in slalom and giant slalom competitions. As in the downhill, there is only one run of the super-G. The defending World Cup and world champion in super-G was Bode Miller of the United States, Austria's Hermann Maier led the current season and won the Olympic gold medal in 1998; the defending Olympic champion was Kjetil André Aamodt of Norway. Aamodt won the gold medal again, Maier took the silver, and the bronze medalist was Ambrosi Hoffmann of Switzerland; Miller did not finish.
