The Brunei History Centre (, abbreviated as ') is a government institution which conducts research, documentation, publication and dissemination on matters pertaining to the history of Brunei. It was established in 1982 by the consent of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah as an institute of historical research on Brunei for the benefit of the Bruneian people. The head of Brunei History Centre is a Principal (), which is held by Mohd. Jamil Al-Sufri. It is a government department under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. History The Brunei History Centre was established on 26 January 1982 by the Consent of His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah to conduct research and dissemination on the history of Brunei for the benefit of the people in the country. Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB; Jawi: بندر سري بڬاوان; ) is the capital city of Brunei. It is officially a municipal area () with an area of and an estimated population of 100,700 as of 2007. Mohammad Jamil Al-Sufri bin Umar (10 December 1921 – 4 March 2021), pen name Wijaya, was a nobleman, historian and teacher from Brunei who previously served as a member of the Royal Council, member of the Royal Succession Council, member of the Islamic Religious Council, and member of the Privy Council. He has also been referred to as the National Historian. He wrote works on the country's history, ancestry, customs and traditions, royal titles, Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB), education, writings on Brunei heroes, and other topics. History Of Brunei
The history of Brunei concerns the settlements and societies located on the north coast of the island of Borneo, which has been under the influence of Indianised kingdoms and empires for much of its history. Local scholars assume that the Islamisation of Brunei started in the fifteenth century, with the formation of the Bruneian Empire, a thalassocracy which covered the northern part of Borneo and the southern Philippines. At the end of the 17th century, Brunei subsequently entered a period of decline brought on by Brunei Civil War, piracy, and European colonial expansion. The Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Library () is a group of public libraries operated by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Brunei. It is also the legal deposit and copyright for Brunei. History The first Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Library was established in 1963 and it was temporarily housed in the then Department of Education. A new building was then constructed on Jalan Elizabeth II in Bandar Seri Begawan, which would become the headquarters for Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Brunei. The building began to be used in 1967 on 29 September the following year it was officially opened by His Royal Highness Pengiran Muda Haji Mohammed Alam. From the time of the establishment, the library materials were only available for reference.
