Bruise Violet
"Bruise Violet" is the third single by American alternative rock band Babes in Toyland and the second single from their 1992 album ''Fontanelle''. It was released on purple 7" vinyl and features early or not produced versions of the song. Music video The band made a video for “Bruise Violet” in August 1992. Filmed in Minneapolis and in New York City at CBGB and the Brooklyn Bridge, it was directed by Gretchen Bender, and features Cindy Sherman, ten members of a Brooklyn women’s motorcycle gang, and ten extras all outfitted in blonde wigs and babydoll dresses to resemble Kat Bjelland. It debuted on MTV’s 120 Minutes in October 1992, and was also featured on the twentieth episode of the second season of ''Beavis and Butt-Head'', "Babes-R-Us". Babes in Toyland was an American alternative rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota, formed in 1987. The band was founded by vocalist and guitarist Kat Bjelland, along with drummer Lori Barbero and bassist Michelle Leon, who was later replaced by Maureen Herman in 1992. Babes in Toyland released three studio albums: ''Spanking Machine'' (1990), followed by the commercially successful ''Fontanelle'' (1992), and ''Nemesisters'' (1995), before becoming inactive in 1997 and eventually disbanding in 2001. Gretchen Bender
Gretchen Bender (1951 in Seaford, Delaware – 2004 in New York City) was an American artist who worked in film, video, and photography. She was from the so-called 1980s Pictures Generation of artists, which included Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo, Jack Goldstein, Laurie Simmons and Richard Prince, and who mixed elements of Conceptual Art and Pop Art using images from popular culture to examine its powerful codes. Bender also designed the credits for the TV show '' America's Most Wanted'', which Roberta Smith of the ''New York Times'' suggested in 2004 "may have originated the rapid-fire hyperediting now pervasive in film, television and video art." Lori Barbero
Lori Anne Barbero (born November 27, 1961) is an American musician and singer who rose to notoriety as the drummer of the Minneapolis-based punk rock band Babes in Toyland, which she joined in 1987. After the dissolution of Babes in Toyland in 2001, Barbero subsequently played drums for the bands Eggtwist and Koalas. In 2015, she reunited with Babes in Toyland, performing on an international tour with the band. Early life Barbero was born in Minneapolis on November 27, 1961. She is of Filipino and Scandinavian descent. At the age of fourteen, her father moved the family to Pearl River, New York, where she attended high school, graduating in 1978. Cynthia Morris Sherman (born January 19, 1954) is an American artist whose work consists primarily of photographic self-portraits, depicting herself in many different contexts and as various imagined characters. CBGB was a New York City music club opened in 1973 by Hilly Kristal in Manhattan's East Village. The club was previously a biker bar and before that was a dive bar. ''Fontanelle'' is the second studio album by the American punk rock band Babes in Toyland, released on August 11, 1992 by Reprise Records. It was the band's first release on a major label, and their first recording to feature Maureen Herman on bass. Recording After extensive touring throughout 1991, the band entered the studio to record their major label follow-up to their debut album, ''Spanking Machine''. Bassist Michelle Leon left the group in December 1991, shortly before the recording of ''Fontanelle'' began, due to the murder of Joe Cole, her then boyfriend. Maureen Herman was recruited as her replacement. The album was co-produced by frontwoman and guitarist Kat Bjelland with Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth heading production.
