Bruce W. Hayward
Bruce William Hayward (born 1950) is a New Zealand geologist, marine ecologist, and author. He is known as a leading expert on living and fossil foraminifera. Education and career At the University of Auckland, Bruce W. Hayward graduated in geology with B.Sc. (Hons) in 1971 and Ph.D. in 1975. In 1976–1977 he was a postdoc at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Hayward was from 1978 to 1991 a micropaleontologist for the New Zealand Geological Survey, Lower Hutt, from 1991 to 1997 curator of marine invertebrates at the Auckland Institute and Museum, and from 1997 to 2002 a self-employed research associate in the Geology Department of the University of Auckland, as well as from 1998 to 2000 a James Cook Research Fellow at the University of Auckland. In 2003 he became the Founder and Principal Scientist of Geomarine Research, located in Auckland. Philippa Black
Philippa Margaret Black (born 26 November 1941) is a New Zealand academic specialising in geology, specifically mineralogy and metamorphic petrology. Black was born on 26 November 1941 in Hamilton. She is the daughter of Dorothy May () and James Corbett Black. She received her education at Taupiri Primary School, St Paul's Catholic School (primary school in Ngāruawāhia), and New Plymouth Girls' High School. She studied at the University of Auckland and earned a MSc and PhD in geology. The title of her 1964 master's thesis was ''Igneous and metamorphic rocks from Tokatoka, Northland''. Hutton Medal
The Hutton Medal is awarded annually by the Royal Society Te Apārangi to a researcher who, working within New Zealand, has significantly advanced understanding through work of outstanding scientific or technological merit. Requirements Prior to 2017 it was awarded in rotation for research in animal sciences, earth sciences, or plant sciences. From, and including, 2017, it is awarded to any of the three disciplines but will not normally be awarded in the same discipline two years in a row. The awardee must have received the greater part of his/her education in New Zealand or have resided in New Zealand for not less than 10 years.
