Bruce M. Snell, Jr.
Bruce M. Snell Jr. (August 18, 1929 – December 20, 2019) was an American judge who served as a justice of the Iowa Supreme Court from 1987 to 2001. Snell was born in Ida Grove, Iowa. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Grinnell College in 1951, and then served in the United States Army. He received a law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1956, and was a law clerk to Judge Henry Norman Graven of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa. Snell moved to New York City to practice law, later returning to Iowa and serving as assistant Iowa Attorney General. Iowa Supreme Court
The Iowa Supreme Court is the highest court in the U.S. state of Iowa. The Court is composed of a Chief Justice and six Associate Justices. The Court holds its regular sessions in Des Moines in the Iowa Judicial Branch Building located at 1111 East Court Avenue on the state Capitol grounds, south of the Iowa State Capitol. History In 1846, Iowa became the 29th state to join the United States. Following the constitution of the Federal government, the powers of the government in Iowa were divided into the legislative branch, the executive branch, and the judicial branch. The Attorney General of Iowa is the chief legal officer of the State of Iowa, United States. The office was created February 9, 1853. The Office of the Attorney General is housed in the Lucas State Office Building in Des Moines; the attorney general also has a room in the Iowa State Capitol to prepare legislation. Michael Streit
Michael John Streit (born 1950) is former justice of the Iowa Supreme Court. Education Streit was born and raised in Sheldon, Iowa. He received his bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Iowa in 1972, and his Juris Doctor degree from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1975. In law school, he was the editor in chief of the San Diego Law Review. Legal and judicial career After graduating from law school, Streit practiced law at Moore & Shelton in Chariton, Iowa until 1983. In that time, Streit also served as the Lucas County attorney. 1983, Streit was appointed to the Iowa District Court by Terry Branstad. Branstad then appointed Streit to the Iowa Court of Appeals in 1986. In 2001, Tom Vilsack appointed Streit to the Iowa Supreme Court. In 1992, Streit founded the Iowa Judicial Institute. The Iowa Court of Appeals is the intermediate-level appellate court of the state of Iowa. Its purpose is to review appeals from trial court decisions which are referred to the court by the Iowa Supreme Court. The court decides the vast majority of appeals filed from trial courts in the state of Iowa, and its decisions are final unless further review is granted by the Iowa Supreme Court. Judges of the court The court is composed of nine judges. Each judge is appointed for one year by the governor, from a list of nominees composed by the State Judicial Nominating Commission. Ida Grove, Iowa
Ida Grove is a city in Ida County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,051 at the time of the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Ida County. History Founded in 1871, the town now known as "Old Ida Grove" was located on the north side of the river. However, when the railroad was built through the neighborhood in 1877 on the south side, Ida Grove was relocated there. Ida Grove was incorporated on May 31, 1878, and was named for the county, which was named for Mount Ida, Greece. Henry Norman Graven (June 1, 1893 – February 1, 1970) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa. Education and career Born in St. James, Minnesota, Graven served as a United States Army combat engineer during World War I. He received an Artium Baccalaureus degree from the University of Minnesota in 1921, and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1921. Relocating to Iowa, he was in private practice in Greene, Iowa from 1921 to 1937. From 1936 to 1937, he was a special assistant state attorney general of Iowa and a counsel for the Iowa State Highway Commission.
