Brown Station
Brown Station ( es, Estación Científica Almirante Brown, or more often ''Base Brown'' or ''Estación Brown'') is an Argentine Antarctic base and scientific research station named after Admiral William Brown, the father of the Argentine Navy. It is located on Sanavirón Peninsula along Paradise Harbor, Danco Coast, in Graham Land, Antarctic Peninsula. Brown is one of 13 research bases in Antarctica operated by Argentina. From 1951 to 1984 it served as a permanent base; since then it is open during the summer season only. History Brown Station dates to 6 April 1951, when Argentina established the ''Almirante Brown'' Naval Detachment at Paradise Harbor. Lemaire Island
Lemaire Island () is an island long and wide, lying west of Duthiers Point off the west coast of Graham Land, Antarctica. It was discovered by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition, 1897–99, under Adrien de Gerlache, who named it for Charles Antoine Lemaire. The island is bordered by the Aguirre Passage which separates it from the Danco Coast. The southwest point of the island is marked by Siebert Rock (), which sits at the entrance to the Lientur Channel. Siebert Rock was first charted by the Chilean Antarctic Expedition, 1950–51, and named after Capitan de Corbeta Ernesto Siebert G., engineer officer on the expedition transport ship Angamos. Andvord Bay
Andvord Bay () is a bay-like fjord, long and wide, which lies between Beneden Head and Duthiers Point along the west coast of Graham Land. It was discovered by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition, 1897–99, under Adrien de Gerlache, and named by him for Rolf Andvord, Belgian consul at Christiania (Oslo) at that time. A popular cruise-ship destination is Neko Harbour, which was discovered by Belgian explorer Adrien de Gerlache in the early 20th century. It was named for a Scottish whaling boat, the ''Neko'', which operated in the area between 1911 and 1924. Palmer Station
Palmer Station is a United States research station in Antarctica located on Anvers Island, the only US station located north of the Antarctic Circle. Initial construction of the station finished in 1968. The station, like the other U.S. Antarctic stations, is operated by the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) of the National Science Foundation. The base is about as distant from the equator as Fairbanks, Alaska. Description The station is named for Nathaniel B. Palmer, usually recognized as the first American to see Antarctica. The maximum population that Palmer Station can accommodate is 46 people. The normal austral summer contingent varies, but it is generally around 40 people. Palmer is staffed year-round; however, the population drops to 15-20 people for winter maintenance after the conclusion of the summer research season. RV Hero (1968)
RV ''Hero'' was a research vessel that operated in Antarctica for the National Science Foundation between 1968 and 1984. She was decommissioned in 1984 and partially sank in 2017 after a storm in Bay Center, Washington. Design In November of 1964 the National Science Foundation commissioned the construction of a wooden shallow draft vessel to enter coastal waters in Antarctica, that larger vessels in service were unable to reach. The contract for the design of ''Hero'' was awarded to ''Potter and M'Arthur, Inc.'', of Boston, Massachusetts with construction taking place in South Bristol, Maine. ''Hero'' had a two deck wooden oak hull, coated with greenheart for icebreaking.
