Brown Holmes
Brown Holmes (December 12, 1907, Toledo, Ohio – February 12, 1974, Los Angeles County, California) was an American screenwriter who worked for several major Hollywood studios in the 1930s and 1940s. He was known as Kenneth Dewitt Holmes in his youth. Holmes' father, Robert Brown Holmes, was a newspaperman. Holmes was raised in California. He had two younger brothers, Richard and Bob. Holmes graduated from Hollywood High School. Among Holmes' credits are several highly-profile prison films: ''I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang'' (1932), '' 20,000 Years in Sing Sing'' (1932) and its remake ''Castle on the Hudson'' (1940). The first two films had a “hyper-present protagonist”, one who appears in nearly every scene, which was uncommon in the 1930s but became a more common style starting with World War II. Toledo ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Lucas County, Ohio, United States. ''The Maltese Falcon'' is a 1930 detective novel by American writer Dashiell Hammett, originally serialized in the magazine '' Black Mask'' beginning with the September 1929 issue. The story is told entirely in external third-person narrative; there is no description whatsoever of any character's thoughts or feelings, only what they say and do, and how they look. The novel has been adapted several times for the cinema. The main character, Sam Spade (who also appeared later in some lesser-known short stories), was a departure from Hammett's nameless detective, The Continental Op. Spade combined several features of previous detectives, notably his cold detachment, keen eye for detail, unflinching and sometimes ruthless determination to achieve his own form of justice, and a complete lack of sentimentality. The Writers Guild of America West (WGAW) is a labor union representing film, television, radio, and new media writers. It was formed in 1954 from five organizations representing writers, including the Screen Writers Guild. It has around 20,000 members. History The Screen Writers Guild (SWG) was formed in 1921 by a group of ten screenwriters in Hollywood angered over wage reductions announced by the major film studios. The group affiliated with the Authors Guild in 1933 and began representing TV writers in 1948. In 1954, the SWG was one of five groups who merged to represent professional writers on both coasts and became the Writers Guild of America, East (WGAe) and West (WGAw). Howard J. Charles Robert Douglas Hardy Andrews (October 19, 1903 – November 11, 1976) was a novelist, screenwriter and radio drama scriptwriter. Career Andrews began his career as a reporter for the ''Chicago Daily News'', and edited the newspaper's magazine ''Midweek''. He began writing radio soap operas when the noted producer team of Frank and Anne Hummert were impressed by ''Three Girls Lost'', a work of serial fiction he had written for the ''Chicago Daily News''. Andrews wrote the story in seven days, on a bet, writing 15,000 words per day. Richard Macaulay
Richard Macaulay (1909–1969) was an American screenwriter. He wrote a number of films with Jerry Wald while under contract to Warner Bros. He was a noted anti-Communist and was a member of the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals. He testified to Congress in 1947 and gave names of writers in the Writers Guild who he believed were communists. He was survived by a wife and two daughters. William Wister Haines
William Wister Haines (September 17, 1908 – November 18, 1989) was an American author, screenwriter, and playwright. His most notable work, ''Command Decision'', was published as a novel, play, and screenplay following World War II. Personal history Haines was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1908, one of three sons of Diedrich Jansen Haines and Ella Wister Haines. His father, the grandson of Reuben Haines III, worked as vice president of a surety bond company, Southern Surety Company of Iowa, and his mother was a notable author of mysteries and serialized stories, many of which appeared in ''The Des Moines Register''.
