Broughton Park RUFC
Broughton Park RUFC, is one of the oldest rugby union clubs in England and was established in 1882, just one year after the Lancashire County Rugby Football Union was founded and eleven years after the formation of the national Rugby Football Union. The first XV plays in North 1 West, a sixth level league in the English league system following their promotion as champions of South Lancs/Cheshire 1 at the end of the 2017-18 season. History Broughton Park was established in 1882 and despite this early beginning was the third Broughton based rugby club, after Broughton RUFC (1862) and Broughton Rangers (1877). The club was overshadowed in terms of international representation by its two neighbours for the first decade of its existence. Chorlton-cum-Hardy
Chorlton-cum-Hardy is a suburban area of Manchester, England, southwest of the Manchester city centre, city centre. Chorlton (ward), Chorlton ward had a population of 14,138 at the United Kingdom Census 2011, 2011 census, and Chorlton Park (ward), Chorlton Park 15,147. By the 9th century, there was an Anglo-Saxon settlement here. In the Middle Ages, improved drainage methods led to population growth. Simon McIntyre
Simon McIntyre is an English rugby union prop forward for Sale Sharks. Career Born in Manchester, he joined his local club, Broughton Park RUFC, at the age of eight, and later represented England at U18 level. McIntyre started his professional career at Sale Sharks in 2009 as an academy player, appearing in five matches in the Aviva Premiership, Amlin Challenge Cup and LV=Cup. He signed for Wasps in 2011, making ten Premiership appearances in his first season. He played in the Wasps sides that reached the semi-finals of the 2015-16 European Rugby Champions Cup and finished Premiership runners-up in 2016-17 and 2019-20. Raffi Quirke
Raffi Quirke (born 18 August 2001) is an English professional rugby union player who plays as a scrum-half for Sale Sharks in the Premiership. Early life Raffi Quirke was born on 18 August 2001 in Chorlton. He started playing rugby when he was 5, inspired by his father Saul who coached him through his early years. He was part of a Broughton Park RFC side at U9s level, in which the side went unbeaten while scoring 267 tries. Quirke was also a triathlete, following in the footsteps of both of his parents, becoming North-West champion at triathlon when 12 or 13. However, it became increasingly difficult to consider pursuing both rugby and triathlons to a professional level, so he eventually decided to focus on rugby. He was educated at Saint Ambrose College. Dan Scarbrough
Dan Scarbrough (born 16 February 1978) is a former rugby union international, at 7's and 15's, who played on the wing or full back for Leeds Tykes, Saracens, Racing Métro and England. He was National Division One leading try scorer with Wakefield for two seasons from 1999/2000 for whom he scored 17 tries from 46 starts and 2 as replacement before moving to Leeds Tykes where he continued his try scoring exploits, finishing top try scorer whilst and Leeds for 3 seasons running, second in the 2001/2002 list of Zurich Premiership scorers and making the Premiership dream team. Henry Toft
Herbert Toft (1909–1987), known as H. B. Toft, Henry Toft, or Bert Toft, was a rugby union international who represented England from 1936 to 1939. He also captained his country. Early life Hebert Toft was born on 2 October 1909 in Salford. He attended Manchester Grammar School and then Manchester University, returning to his school to become a teacher and later headmaster. Born Herbert Toft, he was known by a number of variations on this. Although named Herbert, by the time he was at university he was known as Henry. One explanation of why he then became known as H B Toft was that when it became apparent that of the founders of the Manchester XXI Club he was the only one with one forename, they rechristened him Henry "Bloody" Toft. Tony Bond (rugby Union)
Tony Bond (born 3 August 1953 in Urmston, Manchester), is a former rugby union international who represented England from 1978 to 1982. Rugby union career Bond started his rugby career playing for Broughton Park and moved to Sale during the 1977–78 season. He toured Canada with the England Under-23 team in May 1977 and scored tries in both internationals against the Canada national rugby union team. He made his international debut on 25 November 1978 at Twickenham in the England vs New Zealand match. Of the 6 matches he played for his national side he was only on the winning side on one occasion, and the four defeats including two to Ireland and two to New Zealand. Mike Leadbetter
Michael Maurice Leadbetter (1946–2009) was a rugby union international and rugby league player, who represented England in 1970. Early life Mike Leadbetter was born on 25 July 1946 in Southport. He attended Ladybarn, a local secondary modern school, and left in 1961 aged 15, without qualifications. After a few years he began his first career in printing and followed this through a series apprenticeships leading to a diploma in management and print technology from Manchester College of Art and Design. Rugby career Leadbetter played his club rugby for Broughton Park, and made his international début on 18 April 1970 at Colombes in the France vs England match. The British & Irish Lions is a rugby union team selected from players eligible for the national teams of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Tony Neary
Anthony Neary (born 25 November 1948) is a former England international rugby union player. He represented England at U18s basketball as well as rugby. He attended De La Salle College in Pendleton, Salford and Liverpool University before qualifying as a solicitor. Rugby career Neary played club rugby for Broughton Park. An open-side wing-forward whose international career ran from 1971 to 1980, his 43 appearances for the England team were a record (subsequently beaten) at the time of his retirement.
