Brooks County Courthouse (Texas)
Brooks County Courthouse is located in Falfurrias, in the U.S. state of Texas. The structure was designed by Alfred Giles in 1914 in the Classic revival style. Prior to the erection of the brick county courthouse, local government housed itself in rented space. The courthouse was named a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1977. Renovation began on the courthouse in 2006. First attempt to build a courthouse After Brooks County was formed from Starr County in 1911, officials met first in a hall, and later in a two-story building in downtown Falfurrias. The county commissioners court set a November, 1912, date for holding a bond election for a courthouse and new roads. Although the bonds passed 344 to 9, the Texas attorney general failed to approve the bond issue, in part because precinct 4 voters were actively seeking to separate from Brooks County. Falfurrias, Texas
Falfurrias ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Brooks County, Texas. Its population was 4,981 at the 2010 census, in a county that in the same census was just over 7,000. The town is named for founder Edward Cunningham Lasater's ranch, La Mota de Falfurrias. In 1893, the Falfurrias ranch was one of the largest in Texas at some . The biggest industry in Falfurrias is the United States Border Patrol interior checkpoint south of the city. As an indirect consequence, many migrants seeking to bypass the checkpoint by setting off across the arid land die of exposure and dehydration. The biggest issue in Falfurrias in the early 21st century is illegal immigration and the costs this imposes on Brooks County. Recorded Texas Historic Landmarks
Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL) is a designation awarded by the Texas Historical Commission for historically and architecturally significant properties in the U.S. state of Texas. RTHL is a legal designation and the highest honor the state can bestow on a historic structure. Purchase and display of a historical marker is a required component of the RTHL designation process. Because it is a legal designation, owners of RTHL-designated structures must give 60 days' notice before any alterations are made to the exterior of the structure. Alfred Giles (architect)
Alfred Giles (May 23, 1853 – August 13, 1920) was a British architect who emigrated to the United States in 1873 at the age of 20. Many of the private homes and public buildings designed by Giles are on the National Register of Historic Places and have been designated Recorded Texas Historic Landmarks. Based in San Antonio, his buildings can be found predominantly in south Texas and northern Mexico. Giles is credited with "a profound influence on architecture in San Antonio." Early life Alfred Giles was born May 23, 1853 near Hillingdon, Middlesex, England. His parents were Thomas and Sophie (Brown) Giles. From 1864 to 1868, he attended the Proprietary School at Gravesend, Kent with a goal of entering the ministry in the Church of England. James Brooks (Texas Ranger)
James Brooks (November 20, 1855 – January 15, 1944) was a Texas Ranger of the Old West, and was a member of the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame, and who developed a reputation as a gunman. Early life James Abijah Brooks was born in Bourbon County, Kentucky, to a wealthy doctor and planter. His father was killed during the American Civil War, and his family's home was destroyed. Brooks then helped his widowed mother raise his seven siblings. Once he felt his family could make it without him, at the age of 21 he departed for the west. He settled in McKinney, Texas, and later bought a farm in Collin County, with his intent being to start a ranch and raise cattle. For a brief time in 1879 he worked as a cowboy along the Chisholm Trail, but found the Kansas winters too harsh, and returned to Texas.
