Bromhead Baronets
The Bromhead Baronetcy, of Thurlby Hall in the County of Lincoln, is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 19 February 1806 for the soldier Lieutenant-General Gonville Bromhead. His eldest son, the second Baronet, was a mathematician. He died unmarried and was succeeded by his younger brother, the third Baronet. He was a Major in the Army and fought at the Battle of Waterloo. His eldest son, the fourth Baronet, was a Colonel in the Indian Staff Corps. He was succeeded by his grandson, the fifth Baronet. He was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Indian Army. As of 2007 the title is held by his son, the sixth Baronet, who succeeded in 1981. However he does not use his title. The Victoria Cross recipient Gonville Bromhead was the youngest son of the third Baronet. The family surname is pronounced "Brumhead". Sir Edward Thomas ffrench Bromhead, 2nd Baronet FRS FRSE (26 March 1789 – 14 March 1855) was a British landowner and mathematician, best remembered as patron of the mathematician and physicist George Green and mentor of George Boole. Life Born the son of Gonville Bromhead, 1st Baronet Bromhead (grandfather of the British second in command of the same name at Rorke's Drift) and Lady Jane ffrench, Baroness ffrench, in Dublin. Bromhead was educated at the University of Glasgow and later at Caius College, Cambridge ( B.A. 1812, M.A. 1815) before taking up the study of law at the Inner Temple in London. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1817. Returning to Lincolnshire, he became High Steward of Lincoln. He became the 2nd Bromhead baronet, of Thurlby Hall in 1822. Sir Gonville Bromhead, 1st Baronet
Lieutenant-General Sir Gonville Bromhead, 1st Baronet (20 September 1758 – 18 May 1822) was a British soldier who served in the Saratoga Campaign during the American Revolutionary War and fought against the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Early life Bromhead was born in Lincoln, England, on September 30, 1758. Gonville was named after his mother, Francis Gonville. His father, Boardman Bromville was a major in the 62 Regiment of Foot. In 1770, at the age of 12, he joined the same regiment of Foot as a staff officer. He was educated at Winchester College and the Military Academy in Little Chelsea. He became an ensign at the age of 15, and a lieutenant at 17. American Revolution At the age of 17 he joined the British forces under Sir Guy Carleton to fight in the American Revolution. Gonville Bromhead
Major Gonville Bromhead VC (29 August 1845 – 9 February 1891) was a British Army officer and recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for valour in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to members of the British armed forces. He received the medal for his part in the defence of Rorke's Drift in January 1879, in which a small British garrison of 139 soldiers successfully repulsed an assault by some 4,000 Zulu warriors. Bromhead was portrayed by Michael Caine in the film '' Zulu'', which depicted the battle. Born into a notable military family, Bromhead was brought up in Thurlby, Lincolnshire. He entered the 24th Regiment of Foot as an ensign in 1867 and was promoted to lieutenant in 1871. Bromhead's battalion was deployed to southern Africa in 1878 and subsequently served in the Ninth Cape Frontier War and the Anglo-Zulu War. Henry De Bromhead
Henry de Bromhead (born 28 October 1972) is an Irish horse trainer who specialises in training horses for National Hunt racing. He has trained a number of Grade 1 winners including Sizing John and Honeysuckle, and is based at stables in Knockeen, County Waterford Career He commenced racehorse training in 2000, having taken over the family stable from his father, Harry. De Bromhead spent time learning training with Robert and Sally Alner and Sir Mark Prescott, and worked at Coolmore Stud. He won his first Grade One race as a trainer in 2008 when Sizing Europe won the Irish Champion Hurdle and since then has gone on to have success in Ireland and the UK. His major successes include the Grand National in 2021, two Champion Hurdles and two Cheltenham Gold Cups at the Cheltenham Festival in 2021 and 2022, three Queen Mother Champion Chase wins, with Sizing Europe in 2011, Special Tiara in 2017 and Put The Kettle On in 2021. Jerome De Bromhead
Jerome de Bromhead (born 2 December 1945) is an Irish composer, classical guitarist, and member of Aosdána. Biography Jerome de Bromhead was born in Waterford, Ireland. He studied with A.J. Potter and James Wilson at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin, with further studies with Seóirse Bodley in 1975 and Franco Donatoni in 1978. He holds an M.A. in music, art history and English from Trinity College Dublin. As a guitarist, he studied with Elspeth Henry (1967–68) and at the Guitar Centre, London (1969). He worked in RTÉ as a television news director and announcer, as well as a senior music producer for radio, until a serious accident forced him to retire in 1996. He currently lives in Dublin. Music His compositions include works for solo guitar as well as orchestral, choral and chamber music. Peter Bromhead (born 31 May 1933) is a New Zealand commercial interior designer, cartoonist and illustrator. Bromhead was born in Portsmouth, England, on 31 May 1933. He trained as an industrial designer in England and Sweden and migrated to New Zealand in the 1950s, and becoming a naturalised New Zealand citizen in 1979. He was the editorial cartoonist for the ''Auckland Star'' from 1973 to 1989. Stephen Bruce Bromhead (30 October 1957 – 16 March 2023) was an Australian politician who was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, representing Myall Lakes for the Nationals from 26 March 2011 until his retirement on 3 March 2023. Bromhead, Saskatchewan
Bromhead is an unincorporated community and ghost town in Souris Valley Rural Municipality No. 7, Saskatchewan, Canada. The community is approximately north of Highway 18 and west of the City of Estevan. When Bromhead was first established in 1913, it was a thriving community and one of the biggest stops along the railway. It featured a three-storey hotel, dance hall, blacksmith shop, tailor, department store, cafe, and photo gallery. A fire swept through town in 1916 and it never fully recovered as many residents didn't have insurance or chose to relocate elsewhere. The town, though, didn't completely die then as some of the town did rebuild. As of 2018, 14 people lived in Bromhead. The local church, Hamar Lutheran, is still open; the post office is still in use; the railway through town, Long Creek Railroad Inc, was bought by locals and put back into service; and the grain elevator is still in use.
