Broken Records (record Label)
Broken Records was an American Christian rock record label founded in 1985. The label closed in the early 1990s. Broken Records became an important label in the development of both the West Coast Christian alternative rock and Christian hip hop scenes. It focused primarily on modern rock, punk and new wave music. Artists signed to Broken Records included: Level Heads, The Altar Boys, The Choir, Crumbächer, The 77s, 4-4-1, Riki Michele, Adam Again and Undercover. After having difficulties with its distributor, the label was for a time run successfully as Brainstorm Artists International (by Ojo Taylor and Gene Eugene). History The band was originally a three-piece comprising Jamie Sutherland, brother Rory Sutherland (violin, guitar and accordion), and Ian Turnbull (guitar, piano and accordion). Riki Michele
Riki Michele (born Michele Bunch, currently Michele Palmer) is a female Christian alternative rock artist. Best known as one of the vocalists for Adam Again, she has also recorded four eclectic solo albums. A reviewer for Knight Ridder describer her as a "funky diva... a diva in the "female artist who knows what the heck she's doing" sense." She was married to Gene Eugene, and though they divorced in 1994 she continued to record with him until his death in 2000. Yum Yum Children
The Yum Yum Children, also known as YMYM FAM, are a Christian band originally from Portland, Oregon, now located in Oklahoma. Their music is similar to that of They Might Be Giants or 1970s style art rock. Background Prior to his involvement with the Yum Yum Children, Leon Goodenough was in a " psychedelic-thrash-garage" / hardcore band called The Clergy, fronted by female vocalist, Christi Simonatti, male drummer, Randy Simonatti and completed by Jim Swanson. They released only one album, ''RUAMI'', in 1993 on Broken Records. ''RUAMI'' was recorded live in the studio and featured an overall sound similar to that of X or early Concrete Blonde. One reviewer stated that their style "switches gears faster than a Lamborghini" and that the band displayed an excellent songwriting sensibility. Gene Andrusco (April 6, 1961 – March 20, 2000), better known as Gene Eugene, was a Canadian-born actor, record producer, engineer, composer and musician. Ojo Taylor
Joey "Ojo" Taylor is an American bassist, vocalist and keyboardist. He is best known for his work with the Christian rock band Undercover. He produced and was a studio musician for Nobody Special, the stage name for his brother, Pat "Nobody" Taylor. Taylor co-owned the Brainstorm Artists International record label with songwriter and Adam Again front man, Gene Eugene. He received his MBA from the University of California, Los Angeles and MM from California State University, Fullerton. He teaches History of Rock, Artist Management, songwriting, Marketing of Recorded Music, Legal Aspects of Music Industry and Entrepreneurship at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Undercover is an American Christian punk band based in Fullerton, California, formed in the early 1980s by Joey "Ojo" Taylor and James "Gym" Nicholson. Through more than two decades and a few lineup changes, the band released eight studio albums and two live albums, and were pioneers in what would later be called Alternative music in the Christian world. The band was known for the spiritual growth shown in their music as their career progressed; ''CCM Magazine'' once called them "the band that grew up in public." Adam Again
Adam Again is an American Rock music, rock band that was active from 1982 until the 2000 death of founder, leader and vocalist Gene Eugene, with Riki Michele on vocals, Paul Valadez on bass, Jon Knox on drums, Greg Lawless on guitar. Dan Michaels often played saxophone. Thom Jurek of AllMusic has described them as "inventive and artfully canny." 4-4-1 (also written as "441") are an alternative-pop Christian rock band who played primarily in the 1980s. 4-4-1 consisted of lead singer/guitarist John McNamara, drummer Steve Giali, lead guitarist John Giali and bassist/keyboardist Glenn Holland. History Formation and breakthrough Formed in 1983, 4-4-1 discovered their blend of catchy beats and melodies capped with insightful lyrics in Glenn's parents’ garage in Arcadia, California, the hometown of all four members. The band recorded their first demo tape of four songs (Judgment Game, Love's Irony, Mom & Dad and Break Out) in the garage and sent it to youth pastors around southern California. James Reid (musician)
James Reid (born 25 May 1974) is a New Zealand singer-songwriter, guitarist, producer, and video producer, best known as the lead singer in the band The Feelers. Reid is regarded as one of New Zealand's most successful songwriters and rock musicians, having formed The Feelers in 1992, which went on to sell more albums than any other New Zealand band to date.
