Curtis Hooks Brogden
Curtis Hooks Brogden (November 6, 1816 – January 5, 1901) was a farmer, attorney and politician who served as the 42nd governor of the U.S. state of North Carolina from 1874 to 1877 during the Reconstruction era. He succeeded to the position after the death of Governor Tod R. Caldwell, after having been elected as the 2nd lieutenant governor of the state on the Republican ticket in 1872. Brogden had a long political career, first elected to state office in 1838 at the age of 22. Building a close friendship with editor William Woods Holden of the '' North Carolina Standard'', he served nearly without a break in various state offices and lastly as US Congressman, until essentially retiring from politics in 1878. He was elected to one more term in the state legislature in 1886. Gwendoline Brogden (28 September 1891 – 1973) was a British stage actress and singer. Career Gwendoline Brogden was born on 28 September 1891 in Hull, the daughter of Thomas Brogden and Gertrude Walsh. She first appeared on stage as a child, starring as The Water Lily in ''Bluebell in Fairyland'' in 1901. After her schooling, she returned to the stage in ''Miss Hook of Holland'' in 1907. John Gilbert Brogden (born 28 March 1969) is an Australian mental health and suicide prevention advocate, suicide survivor, businessman and former NSW politician. Brogden is the President oLifeLine International Patron and former Chairman oLifeline Australia Chair of AusPayNet, Director of Colonial First State Superannuation, Chair of the Urban Property Group Advisory Board and Chairman of Furlough House Retirement Village. He was Leader of the Opposition in New South Wales from 2002 to 2005. John Brogden (industrialist)
John Brogden (2 February, 1798 – 9 December, 1869) was a railway industrialist. He formed the company John Brogden and Sons with four of his five sons. Early life Brogden was born on 2 February, 1798 on his father's farm at Worston, near Clitheroe in Lancashire. He was raised in Worston and at another farm near Clitheroe. He was educated at Clitheroe Grammar School. John Brogden and Sons As a young man he moved to a rapidly growing Manchester and established himself as a cleansing contractor. Whereas other ambitious young men in Manchester at that time chose to work in the burgeoning cotton industry, Brogden was an outdoor man, fond of riding and hunting and experienced with horses, so he preferred to work in haulage and transport. Alexander Brogden (3 November 1825-26 November 1892) was a politician who became Member of Parliament for Wednesbury, England. Career Brogden was born in Manchester on 3 November 1825, the second son of John Brogden (1798 – 1869) and educated at Blackburn, New College Manchester and King's College London, where he read mathematics. He married Anne Garstang on 6 September 1848 at Manchester Cathedral. He joined his father's contracting business, John Brogden and Sons, in 1846. He had intended to join the Bar but was persuaded to support his father instead. Among his first work for the firm was the supervision of contracts for the Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham Railway, the Ashton Branch of the Manchester and Birmingham Railway and the East Lancashire Railway. James Brogden (industrialist)
James Brogden (7 April 1832 – 26 January 1907) was a British businessman, the fourth son of John Brogden (1798–1869) of Manchester. He spent most of his adult life in Mid Glamorgan, first at Tondu and later at Porthcawl. He was the junior partner in John Brogden and Sons. In 1853/4, Brogdens bought the iron and coal mining business at Tondu, Mid-Glamorgan of Sir Robert Price, 2nd Baronet. Price had got into difficulties during recessions in the iron trade in the 1840s. In February 1854, John Brogden sent his son James, then aged 22, to revive and run the business, which was very run down. In July 1854, John Brogden signed a new 99-year lease with Jane Nicholl. James rapidly reorganised the works and established his home at Tondu House, which he rebuilt. In the 1861 census, James said he was employing 900 men and farming with 20 men. Leon Lafayette Brogden Sr. (August 26, 1910 – October 1, 2000) was an American high school football, basketball and baseball coach in Edenton, Wilson and Wilmington, North Carolina. His most famous products were two quarterbacks: Roman Gabriel, who spent 16 seasons in the NFL and was voted NFL MVP in 1969, and Sonny Jurgensen, who spent 18 seasons in the NFL and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1983.
