Brodie West
Brodie West is a Canadian alto saxophonist who has worked with The Ex, Getatchew Mekuria, Sandro Perri, Lina Allemano, Hamid Drake and Gord Downie. Biography Born in 1975 and raised in Nanaimo, British Columbia, West began playing saxophone in the sixth grade. In his teens, West began performing as well as attending educational programs which led to being awarded a soprano saxophone at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Idaho, and receiving the Rising Star Award at Musicfest Canada, which included a full scholarship to Humber College in Toronto in 1993. Career In 1998, West formed a trio called Zebradonk with drummer Shawn Abedin and trumpeter Alfons Fear. Deciding to do a busking tour of Europe, the trio met Han Bennink at Bimhuis in Amsterdam. ''Moa Anbessa'' is an album by Ethiopian saxophonist Getatchew Mekuria with Dutch post-punk band The Ex and guests, released in 2006 on The Ex's subsidiary label Terp. Background The project came together on the heels of The Ex's previous studio album '' Turn'', which incorporated elements of Eritrean and Congolese music alongside a tribute to the Ethio-Jazz anthems of Getatchew Mekuria. The Ex had toured Ethiopia twice and then invited Mekuria to perform at their 25th anniversary show in Amsterdam where he proposed that The Ex be the backup band for his next album. Getatchew Mekurya
Getatchew Mekurya (Amharic: ጌታቸው መኩሪያ ወልደ ተክሌ; 14 March 1935 – 4 April 2016) was an Ethiopian jazz saxophonist. Early career Mekurya was born on 14 March 1935, in Yifat, Ethiopia. His father was a honey merchant. Young Getatchew played traditionel Ethiopian instruments such as the washint flute, the krar and the masenqo, and later moved on to the saxophone and clarinet. At age 13, he began his professional career in 1949 as a part of the Municipality Band in Addis Ababa. In 1955 he joined the house band at Addis' Haile Selassie I Theatre, and in 1965 joined the famous Police Orchestra. He was also one of the first musicians to record an instrumental version of ''shellela'', a genre of traditional Amhara vocal music sung by warriors before going into battle. Bimhuis
The Bimhuis is a concert hall for jazz and improvised music in Amsterdam. With an average of 150 performances a year the Bimhuis is the main stage for these musical genres in the Netherlands. In 2017 it was also a host for the 17th edition of the Sonic Acts Festival. The Bimhuis was founded in 1973 and opened on October 1, 1974. Until the summer of 2004 it was located at Oude Schans 73–77 in the centre of the city. Han Bennink (born 17 April 1942) is a Dutch drummer and percussionist. On occasion his recordings have featured him playing soprano saxophone, bass clarinet, trombone, violin, banjo and piano. Though perhaps best known as one of the pivotal figures in early European free jazz and free improvisation, Bennink has worked in essentially every school of jazz, and is described by critic Chris Kelsey as "one of the unfortunately rare musicians whose abilities and interests span jazz's entire spectrum."
