Brockley
Brockley is a district and an wards of the United Kingdom, electoral ward of south London, England, in the London Borough of Lewisham south-east of Charing Cross. History The name Brockley is derived from "Broca's woodland clearing", a wood where badgers are seen (''broc'' is the Old English for badger) or Brook (Stream) by a wood (Ley). Formerly part of the county of Kent, Brockley became a part of the Metropolitan Borough of Lewisham in the County of London in 1889, and subsequently was brought into the London Borough of Lewisham with the creation of Greater London in 1965. Brockley has its origins in a small agricultural hamlet of the same name located in the area of the "Crofton Park#Brockley Jack, Brockley Jack" (rebuilt 1895), a large Victorian public house that today houses the Brockley Jack Theatre. Crofton Park
Crofton Park is a mainly residential suburb and electoral ward in the London Borough of Lewisham. It is the original site of the former agricultural hamlet of Brockley. It is located south east of Charing Cross, and is south of Brockley and north of Honor Oak. Major points of interest include the Rivoli Ballroom, the Brockley Jack Theatre and the Arts and Crafts Gothic church of St Hilda. Crofton Park Ward is bordered by Brockley and Ladywell Cemeteries to the north, and Garthorne Road Nature Reserve in the west with the London to Brighton railway running along the western boundary of the ward and a section of Ladywell Fields to the south east. Brockley Jack Theatre
The Brockley Jack Theatre (also known as the Jack Studio Theatre) is an Off West End theatre in the Crofton Park area of Lewisham, south London. It shares a building with the Brockley Jack pub. The theatre was founded by David Kincaid, Michael Bottle and Peter Rocca; Kincaid and Bottle took the leads roles in its first production, of the Chekhov pieces ''On the Harmful Effects of Tobacco'' and ''Swansong''. It opened in 1992 and is a registered charity. The Brockley Jack Theatre's programming is a mix of established works and new writing, produced by in-house company Southside Arts and by visiting theatre companies, plus comedy and music nights and regular work-in-progress "scratch" shows. It runs workshops to support new playwrights, hosts the Brockley Jack Film Club and produces an annual festival of new plays, Write Now, supported by Lewisham Council. Brockley Railway Station
Brockley railway station serves the south-east London district of Brockley and is on the main railway line between and . It is down the line from London Bridge. The station is operated by London Overground, with London Overground and Southern trains serving the station. Thameslink and some Southern services pass through the station. Lewisham () is an area of southeast London, England, south of Charing Cross. It is the principal area of the London Borough of Lewisham, and was within the Historic counties of England, historic county of Kent until 1889. Lewisham () is a London borough in south-east London; it forms part of Inner London. The principal settlement of the borough is Lewisham. St Johns, London
St Johns is a district around the station of the same name in south-east London. It lies within the Borough of Lewisham and borders the Royal Borough of Greenwich. It makes up the northwestern part of Lewisham along with Telegraph Hill. St John's is noted for its mid 19th-century housing, constructed as Deptford New Town, and protected as the Brookmill Road and St John's Conservation Areas since 1972 and 1976 respectively. It was also the site in 1957 of one of Britain's worst railway disasters. Etymology The district is named after the dedication of the Church of England parish church of St John, Deptford that was established in 1855. Deptford
Deptford is an area on the south bank of the River Thames in southeast London, within the London Borough of Lewisham. It is named after a ford of the River Ravensbourne. From the mid 16th century to the late 19th it was home to Deptford Dockyard, the first of the Royal Dockyards. This was a major shipbuilding dock and attracted Peter the Great to come and study shipbuilding. London, Chatham And Dover Railway
The London, Chatham and Dover Railway (LCDR or LC&DR) was a railway company in south-eastern England created on 1 August 1859, when the East Kent Railway was given parliamentary approval to change its name. Its lines ran through London and northern and eastern Kent to form a significant part of the Greater London commuter network. The company existed until 31 December 1922 when its assets were merged with those of other companies to form the Southern Railway as a result of the grouping determined by the Railways Act 1921. Crofton Park Railway Station
Crofton Park is a station on the 'Catford Loop' to Sevenoaks route, between Nunhead and Catford. It is in Travelcard Zone 3. Crofton Park is in the historic centre of Brockley, in the London Borough of Lewisham and is measured from . Facilities The station has an automated ticket machine on the overbridge; the station ticket office is open Mon – Fri 0640–1320. In 2007 the ticket office was closed at weekends; however recently (mid-2008) the ticket office has been open on Saturdays.
