Broadway After Dark
''Broadway After Dark'' is a 1924 American silent comedy film directed by Monta Bell and starring Adolphe Menjou, Norma Shearer, and Anna Q. Nilsson. Plot As described in a film magazine review, Rose Dulane, a waitress at a restaurant, is fascinated by a man to whom she confides that she is guilty of a petty theft. He is a detective and arrests her. She serves time and, upon release, finally lands a job in a minor theatrical boarding house. There she meets Ralph Norton, a well-to-do Broadway rounder, having a look at life in a less luxurious atmosphere. Norton is attracted by Rose and they attend the Actors' Equity ball. He proves to be her friend, rescues her from the detective's persecutions, and wins her love. Monta Bell
Louis Monta Bell (February 5, 1891 – February 4, 1958) was an American film director, producer, and screenwriter. Biography Monta Bell first appeared in theatrical venues with Washington D.C. stock companies and then took up journalism and publishing in New York. While in New York, filmmaker Charlie Chaplin enlisted the 32-year-old Bell to ghost-write his 1922 memoir ''My Trip Abroad''. Bell, along a number of other apprentices including Harry d'Abbadie d'Arrast and Mal St. Clair, became film editors and assistant directors. Here Bell was “exposed to Chaplin’s meticulous style of comedy construction and a complete immersion in all aspects of filmmaking.” In 1924, Paramount manager Walter Wanger engaged a number of “promising young men without significant directing experience”, among them Bell, to direct pictures at their Astoria Studios, Queens, New York. Willard Louis
Willard Louis (April 19, 1882 – July 22, 1926) was an American stage and film actor of the silent era. He appeared in more than 80 films between 1911 and 1926. He was born in San Francisco, California. Louis had an art studio before he became an actor at age 20. He acted on stage for four years before he began making films. In addition to his work in dramatic films, Louis performed in comedic roles. In 1926, he signed a five-year contract with Warner Bros., with some of the proposed films having him co-starring with Louise Fazenda. Lous died of typhoid fever and pneumonia in Glendale, California, aged 44. Elsie Louise Ferguson (August 19, 1883 – November 15, 1961) was an American stage and film actress. Early life Born in New York City, Elsie Ferguson was the only child of Hiram and Amelia Ferguson. Her father was a successful attorney. Raised and educated in Manhattan, she became interested in the theater at a young age and made her stage debut at 17 as a chorus girl in a musical comedy. For almost two years, from 1903 to 1905, she was a cast member in ''The Girl from Kays''. In 1908, she was leading lady to Edgar Selwyn in ''Pierre of the Plains''. Raymond Hitchcock (actor)
Raymond Hitchcock (October 22, 1865November 24, 1929) was an American silent film actor, stage actor, and stage producer, who appeared in, or produced 30 plays on Broadway from 1898 to 1928, and who appeared in the silent films of the 1920s. Biography He appeared first as a star in the character of Abijah Booze in ''The Yankee Consul'', and sang ''It Was Not Like This in the Olden Time''. In his stage career, Hitchcock went back and forth between dramatic roles and ones in comic opera. In 1905 he appeared on Broadway with John Bunny in ''Easy Dawson'', the two apparently playing firemen. Hitchcock also made several phonograph recordings, many of which survive. In 1907, Hitchcock was charged with the sexual abuse of two adolescent girls together with New York magnate William A. Chanler. Dorothy Stone (June 3, 1905 – September 24, 1974) (a/k/a Dorothy B. Stone and Dorothy Stone Collins) was an actress, dancer, and singer in theater and motion pictures, born in Brooklyn, New York. Fred Stone
Fred Andrew Stone (August 19, 1873 – March 6, 1959) was an American actor. Stone began his career as a performer in circuses and minstrel shows, went on to act in vaudeville, and became a star on Broadway and in feature films, which earned him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Biography He was particularly famous for appearing on stage opposite David C. Montgomery. They had a 22-year partnership until Montgomery's death in 1917. He was born in New York City and died in Los Angeles, California, from lung cancer. Ethel Browning (born Ethel Bull; April 17, 1877 – September 22, 1965) was an American actress and screenwriter. Early years The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Bull, Browning was born in Indianapolis and lived on the South Side of St. Louis, Missouri, until she debuted on stage, after which her family moved to Dayton, Ohio.
