The British Swimming Championships - 100 metres backstroke winners formerly the ( Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) National Championships) are listed below. The event was originally contested over 110 yards and then switched to the metric conversion of 100 metres in 1971. In 1960 Natalie Steward set a world record of in the final. In 1962 final Linda Ludgrove also set a new world record of 1.10.9 sec. In 1996 there was dead-heat in the women's final. Margaret Edwards (born 28 March 1939) is an English former competitive swimmer. Early life Edwards was born on 28 March 1939. Swimming career She represented Great Britain at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, where she won a bronze medal in the women's 100-metre backstroke in the time of 1:13.1. At the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, she won a gold medal and a silver medal in the women's 440-yard medley relay and 110-yard backstroke respectively, while representing England. At the ASA National British Championships she won the 110 yards backstroke title twice (1959, 1961). Steve Pickell
Stephen John Pickell (born August 11, 1957) is a Canadian retired competition swimmer. Swimming career Pickell won a silver medal in the men's 4x100-metre medley relay at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He did so alongside Graham Smith, Clay Evans and Gary MacDonald. Despite being Canadian he won the 1969 ASA National British Championships 100 metres backstroke title and the 200 metres backstroke title. Margaret Kelly (swimmer)
Margaret Mary Kelly, MBE (born 22 September 1956), later known by her married name Margaret Hohmann, is an English former competitive swimmer who represented Great Britain in the Olympics and FINA world championships, and competed for England in the Commonwealth Games. Swimming career Kelly competed in the 1976 and 1980 Summer Olympics, winning a silver medal in 1980 in the women's 4×100-metre medley relay alongside teammates Helen Jameson, Ann Osgerby and June Croft. At the 1976 Games she had competed in the 100-metre breaststroke, 200-metre breaststroke, and 4×100-metre medley relay, reaching the final in all three events. In 1980 she swam just the 100-metre breaststroke in addition to the relay medal-winning swim, where she finished fourth in the final in a time of 1:11.48. Colin Cunningham (swimmer)
Colin Cunningham (born 15 September 1954) is an English former freestyle and backstroke swimmer. Swimming career He represented Great Britain at the 1972 Summer Olympics. There he competed in the individual 100-metre and 200-metre backstroke. Cunningham was also a member of the relay teams in the 4×200-metre freestyle and 4×100-metre medley. He represented England and won a silver medal in the 4 x 200 metres freestyle relay, a bronze medal in the 4 x 100 metres freestyle relay and another bronze medal in the 4 x 100 metres medley relay, at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand. Donna Gurr
Donna-Marie Gurr, CM (born February 18, 1955) is a former swimmer from Canada, who won the bronze medal in the 200m backstroke at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Swimming career Gurr competed in the backstroke and freestyle events at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. There she won the bronze medal in the 200-metre backstroke. In 1976, she was made a Member of the Order of Canada, Canada's highest achievement award, in a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. She was inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame in 1987, the BC Swimming Hall of Fame in 2004, and the Canadian Aquatic Hall of Fame. Gurr started swimming at the newly built Arbutus Club in Vancouver in 1965, and later joined the Canadian Dolphin Swim Club, where her idol Elaine Tanner swam and was coached by Howard Firby.
