British Resident Of Perak
This is a list of the British Residents of Malay State of Perak, British Malaya.Malaysian States http://www.worldstatesmen.org/Malay_states.htm The position of Resident was an administrative post. By the terms of the Pangkor Treaty, the Resident was an adviser to His Highness Sultan of Perak whose decisions were binding in all matters in administration except for Malay customs and religion. The British Resident post is also equivalent with today's Menteri Besar post, where he was the chairman of the Perak State Council and the Sultan was the Lord President of the Council. The official residence for the Resident was at the Residency Hill, Taiping. Other residences were also available in Kuala Kangsar and Ipoh. A resident minister, or resident for short, is a government official required to take up permanent residence in another country. John Pickersgill Rodger
Sir John Pickersgill Rodger, (12 February 1851 – 19 September 1910) was a British colonial administrator. Early life Rodger was born in 1851 at Marylebone in London, the second son of Sir Robert Rodger and his wife Sophia (née Pickersgill). His father was a landowner, magistrate and Justice of the Peace who purchased Hadlow Castle in Kent where the family lived, and was the High Sheriff of Kent in 1865. Geoffrey Edmund Cator
Sir Geoffrey Edmund Cator (14 August 1884 – 21 April 1973) was an English diplomat mainly active in the Malayan Civil Service. Biography Cator was born in Lacock, Wiltshire, the son of brewer Robert Cator of Bath and Evelyn Susan Sotheron Estcourt. He married Elizabeth Margaret Wynne Mostyn in 1922; they had a son, Peter John Cator (26 October 1924 – 22 January 2006) and daughter Rosemary Ann Cator. Sir Geoffrey joined the Malayan Civil Service in 1907 until 1939. He was the British Resident of Brunei from May 1916 until March 1921. Later he was posted as the Superintendent of Government Monopolies of Straits Settlements, the District Officer of Klang and also member of the Legislative Council of Federated Malay States. He was the British Resident of Selangor (1932-1933) and British Resident of Perak (1933-1939). His last post was the head of the Malay States Information Agency in London. Charles Walter Hamilton Cochrane, MCS, CMG (3 August 1876 – 26 October 1932), was the 17th British Resident of Perak and Chief Secretary to Government of Malaya from 1929 to 1932. Career In 1899, Cochrane joined the Federated Malay Civil Service as a cadet. He was an agent for the Malaya Information Agency, and became Under Secretary to the Government in 1921 and then in 1925 political Adviser in Johore. Oswald Francis Gerard Stonor (3 June 1872 – 22 June 1940) was a British colonial administrator who served in British Malaya. Career Stonor joined the Malay civil service as a junior officer in 1890, and began his career as Acting Private Secretary to Governor of the Straits Settlements, Cecil Clementi Smith. He then served in various positions including Assistant District Officer at Serendah; District Officer at Ulu Langat; Acting Registrar of Titles and Collector of Land Revenue at Kuala Lumpur; District Officer at Tapah, and District Officer at Batang Padang. In 1921, he was promoted to British Resident of Selangor where he remained until 1926 when he was appointed British Resident of Perak. Oliver Marks (10 September 1866 – 24 May 1940) was an English people, English first-class cricketer and colonial administrator. Life The son of John George Marks, and nephew of Henry Stacy Marks and Frederick Walker (painter), Frederick Walker, he was born in September 1866 in Surrey, in Thornton Heath or Beddington. He was educated at Whitgift School. After leaving Whitgift School, Marks went to British Ceylon, where he was a tea planter from 1887 to 1891. From there he went to British Malaya, where he was the superintendent of a Malayan government plantation in Perak.
