British Quiz Association
The British Quiz Association (BQA) runs the British Quizzing Championships on the first Saturday in September every year. Quiz Championships 1999/2000 In 1999 and 2000 Trevor Montague had run a ''British Quiz Championships'' as a sport of the Mind Sports Olympiad. BQA 2001 till 2004 The BQA was founded as his brainchild in a Reading Hotel on 10 July 2001. The first chairman was Mastermind club president Tony Dart, Montague was to be the managing director and also present were Mark Labbett and Rob Linham. The association ran British Championships in 2001–3, but went into a moribund state following resignations of many of the committee. Change to IQA In late 2004 Trevor Parry took over running the organisation but only four people competed in the 2004 event (see link). The British Quiz Championship (BQC), also termed the British Quizzing Championship, is a quiz competition in the United Kingdom. The current competition has been organised since 2004 by Chris Jones' and IQA-CEO Jane Allen's company Quizzing Ltd. Early in 2011 the re-launch of the quizzing.co.uk website saw it rebranded as the home of the British Quiz Association. Before 2004 there had already been some sort of "British Championship" since 1999 run first only by Trevor Montague then by the British Quiz Association (see that page for champions), but after internal strife and a fall in interest in 2003/2004 (see attendance in the BQA links) the old BQA-management gave up and the only British Quiz Championship now is this one run by Quizzing Ltd. Trevor Montague
Trevor Howard Montague (born 20 May 1954) is a British author who compiles books of facts. Best known for ''A to Z of Almost Everything'', he has since compiled ''A to Z of Sport'', ''A to Z of Britain and Ireland'' and ''A to Z of British (and Irish) Popular Culture''. He is also a prolific game show contestant, with victories in ''Today's the Day (game show), Today's the Day'' and ''Fifteen to One'', although the latter victory resulted in legal action as Montague was ineligible to win. Montague founded the British Quiz Association in 2001. Montague first appeared on ''Fifteen to One'' in 1990 and was quickly eliminated. In 1992 he entered again under a false name, Steve Romana, and wearing a disguise, in clear breach of the show's rules. Montague's eligibility was only called into question after a viewer spotted him during a rerun of the show on Challenge TV, Challenge. Mind Sports Olympiad
The Mind Sports Olympiad (MSO) is an annual international multi-disciplined competition and festival for games of mental skill and mind sports. The inaugural event was held in 1997 in London with £100,000 prize fund''Mind Sports Olympiad Supplement'', The Times, 11 August 1997, online version available from studiogiochi MSO archive and was described as possibly the biggest games festival ever held. Mark Labbett
Mark Andrew Labbett (born 15 August 1965), also known by his professional nickname The Beast, is an English quizzer and television personality. Since 2009 he has been one of the "chasers" on the ITV game show '' The Chase'' as "The Beast" and from late February 2022 rejoined the Australian version of the show. He previously appeared between 2013 and 2015 on GSN's American version as their sole chaser; between 2016 and 2020 as one of six chasers on the Australian version; and as one of four chasers in the second season of ABC's American revival. Labbett has appeared as a contestant on several other television quiz shows and is a regular in quizzing competitions. Kevin Ashman
Kevin Clifford Ashman (born 2 November 1959) is an English quiz player. He is often considered one of the greatest quizzers in the world, and since 2002 has been a professional quizzer; he has been an '' Egghead'' since 2003. He has won most of the top-level quiz tournaments in which he has taken part, among them several World and European Championships. Early life Ashman is from Winchester, Hampshire, He attended St Bede's Primary School and Peter Symonds Grammar School/College. He then graduated from the University of Southampton with a BA degree in Modern History. He became interested in quizzes in his mid-twenties when he resolved to improve his knowledge of the sciences whilst working as a civil servant in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Ian Bayley
__NOTOC__ Ian Bayley is a British quiz player who has won several medals in quizzing, both in singles and as a member of a team. He won the European Championships three times straight from 2007 to 2009 with "Broken Hearts" (featuring Olav Bjortomt, David Stainer and Mark Grant), and in 2004 with the English national team. With his partner Pat Gibson he also won the European pair championships in 2005 and the IQA British Quiz Championship in 2006. In individual competitions he won the British Championship in 2001 to take the Mark Bytheway trophy. Quiz Games
A quiz is a form of game or mind sport in which players attempt to answer questions correctly on one or several specific topics. Quizzes can be used as a brief assessment in education and similar fields to measure growth in knowledge, abilities, or skills. They can also be televised for entertainment purposes, often in a game show format. Etymology The earliest known examples of the word date back to 1780; its etymology is unknown, but it may have originated in student slang. It initially meant an "odd, eccentric person" or a "joke, hoax". Later (perhaps by association with words such as "inquisitive") it came to mean "to observe, study intently", and thence (from about mid-19th century) "test, exam."
