British Polio Fellowship
The British Polio Fellowship is a charitable organisation supporting and empowering people in the UK living with the late effects of polio and post-polio syndrome (PPS). It provides information, welfare and support to those affected, to enable them to live full, independent and integrated lives and campaigns to raise awareness of PPS. Purpose The charity's purpose is to empower and support all people in the UK living with the effects of polio and PPS by providing information, welfare and support to enable them to live full independent and integrated lives; by supporting a regional/branch/group structure that enables mutual support amongst members to be carried out in a caring and inclusive environment; and by developing worldwide alliances with other polio and post-polio groups. Alex Neil (politician)
Alexander Neil (born 22 August 1951) is a Scottish politician who served as Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing from 2012 to 2014 and Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Communities and Pensioners' Rights from 2014 to 2016. A member of the Scottish National Party (SNP), he was the Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Airdrie and Shotts constituency from 2011 until his retirement in 2021. Early life and education Neil was born in Ayrshire Central Hospital, Irvine, the son of Margaret (née Gunning) and Alexander Neil snr, a coalminer. He was brought up in Patna, Ayrshire, and became involved in Labour politics, joining the Labour Party in 1967, aged 16. Anne Wafula Strike
Anne Wafula Strike MBE (born 8 May 1969) is a Harlow-based British Paralympic wheelchair racer. Wafula Strike was born in Mihuu in Bungoma, Kenya, and contracted polio at the age of two, resulting in a later Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital diagnosis of below T7 paralysis. Arriving in the UK in April 2000, she was introduced to wheelchair racing in 2002 and in 2004 became the first Kenyan wheelchair racer to represent her country, competing in the T53 400m finals at the Paralympics in Athens. Following a successful application for British citizenship in 2006, she became a member of Team GB and, after reclassification, now competes in the T54 racing category as a British athlete. A past winner of the BBC's 'My Story' competition, her autobiography ''In my Dreams I Dance'' was published by HarperCollins in 2010. Julia Roberts (QVC Presenter)
Julia Roberts (born 10 June 1956) is a British television home shopping host on the shopping channel QVC. Dancer Roberts started her career as a cabaret dancer, supporting Cannon and Ball in a summer season in Guernsey, and then followed their act on to television. She supplemented this work with various supporting cast roles on TV including ''Citizen Smith'' and '' Doctor Who'' in 1979, Christmas pantomimes and dancing on cruise liners. She then took a job in a cabaret show in Hong Kong, dancing and singing. Roberts returned to the UK, and appeared in various commercials, including the Woolwich Building Society and ''Head & Shoulders'' shampoo. James Crisp
James Crisp (born 11 October 1982 in Nottingham) is a British swimmer. He has won gold medals in the Paralympic Games as well as the IPC world and European championships, breaking numerous records in the process. He competes in S9 classification events after having contracted polio as a child. Personal life Crisp was born on 11 October 1982 in Nottingham. He contracted polio as a child through vaccination and was encouraged to take up swimming as a form of physiotherapy. He moved to Sheffield to study at university and became a member of the City of Sheffield Swim Squad (COSSS), training at Ponds Forge. Richard Craig Scudamore CBE (born 11 August 1959) is an English sports executive. He was the Executive Chairman of the English Premier League from June 2014 until his retirement in November 2018. He had previously served as chief executive since November 1999. Biography Scudamore attended Kingsfield School in Kingswood, Bristol, where he was Head Boy in his final year and which he left in 1977. He studied law at the University of Nottingham but never went on to qualify or practice law.
