British Intelligence (film)
''British Intelligence'' is a 1940 spy film set in World War I. It was directed by Terry O. Morse and stars Boris Karloff and Margaret Lindsay. The film, also known as ''Enemy Agent'', was released in the United States in January 1940. The Warner Bros. B picture was based on a 1918 play ''Three Faces East'' written by Anthony Paul Kelly and produced on the stage by George M. Cohan. Two film adaptations of ''Three Faces East'' in 1926 and 1930 preceded ''British Intelligence''.Jacobs 2011, p. 244. Plot During World War I, Franz Strendler, a master German spy has cost the British dearly. In desperation, they send for their best agent, currently undercover in Germany. Pilot Frank Bennett is sent to pick him up, but the Germans are forewarned and Bennett is shot down. Luckily, he survives and is rescued by friendly soldiers. Bruce Lester
Bruce Lester (6 June 1912 – 13 June 2008) was a South African-born English film actor with over 60 screen appearances to his credit between 1934 and his retirement from acting in 1958. Lester's career divided into two distinct periods. Between 1934 and 1938, billed as Bruce Lister, he appeared in upwards of 20 British films, mostly of the cheaply shot and quickly forgotten quota quickie variety. He then moved to the US, where he changed his surname to Lester, and found himself for a time appearing in some of the biggest prestige productions of their day, alongside stars such as Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Tyrone Power and Errol Flynn. Morton Lowry
Morton Lowry (born Edward Morton Lowater;Lancashire Birth Records, Volume 8c, pg. 1257. 13 February 1914 – 26 November 1987) was a British actor. He is best known for his film roles as John Stapleton in ''The Hound of The Baskervilles'' (1939) and for his role as Mr. Jonas in ''How Green was My Valley'' (1941). Stuart Holmes
Stuart Holmes (born Joseph Liebchen; March 10, 1884 – December 29, 1971) was an American actor and sculptor whose career spanned seven decades. He appeared in almost 450 films between 1909 and 1964, sometimes credited as Stewart Holmes. Biography Holmes was born Joseph Liebchen on March 10, 1884, in Chicago, Illinois, where he was educated. For 20 years, Holmes performed in vaudeville and on stage, with the latter often being in Shakespeare's plays. His work in the theater included a stint in Germany. Holmes's film career began in 1911 and ended with ''The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance'' (1962). As a sculptor Holmes created work for at least three California United States post offices — in Oceanside (1936), Claremont (1937), and Bell (1937). Leyland Hodgson
Leyland Hodgson (5 October 1892 – 16 March 1949), also known as Leland Hodgson, was an English-born American character actor of the 1930s and 1940s. Born in London on 5 October 1892, Hodgson entered the theater in 1898. In his early 20s, Hodgson was part of a touring theater company, spending his time in the British areas of the Far East, before entering the stage in Australia. In 1930 he would move to the United States, where he would make his film debut in the Oscar-nominated film, ''The Case of Sergeant Grischa'' in 1930. Over his almost twenty-year career, he would appear in over 130 films, mostly in supporting or smaller roles. He is best known for his work on the Sherlock Holmes franchise of the late 1930s and 1940s, beginning with 1939's '' The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes''. Arnold Frey (11 October 1900 – 26 June 1961) was a German actor who portrayed the Nazi villain Dr. Lang in the Frank Buck movie ''Tiger Fangs'' (1943). Biography Frey arrived in the United States in October 1926, according to the New York passenger manifest for the S/S ''Muenchen'', and became a naturalized citizen August 23, 1940. The Clarence Derwent Awards are theatre awards given annually by the Actors' Equity Association on Broadway in the United States and by Equity, the performers' union, in the West End in the United Kingdom. Clarence Derwent (23 March 1884 – 6 August 1959) was an English actor, director, and manager. He was educated at St Paul's School, London and the Birkbeck Institute. He joined Sir Frank Benson's stage company, with whom he stayed for five years. He then joined Annie Horniman's repertory company in Manchester. He was seen in a great variety of roles, both in London and New York. He made his last appearance on stage in 1948 in ''The Madwoman of Chaillot''. He died in New York at the age of 75. Glen Cavender (September 19, 1883 – February 9, 1962) was an American film actor. He appeared in more than 250 films between 1914 and 1949. Biography Glen Cavender was born in Tucson, Arizona, and died in Hollywood, California. He started his acting career in vaudeville shows. Cavender belonged to the original Keystone Cops and was a regular in numerous Mack Sennett comedies. He also worked as a director for three Mack Sennett films between 1914 and 1916. During the 1920s, Cavender worked for the film studios Educational and Christie and appeared in Buster Keaton's film classic '' The General'' (1926) as the antagonistic Union Captain Anderson.
