British Hospitals Association
The British Hospitals Association was established by Henry Burdett in 1884. In 1887 it established a register of trained nurses for those who could show that they had worked for at least a year in a hospital or an infirmary and had been trained in the duties of a nurse. It ran a Nurses Co-operative in the early years of the twentieth century which employed 500 nurses and had a turnover of £50,000 a year. Sir Arthur Stanley was chairman in 1924. Bernard Docker was the chairman in 1941. Henry Burdett
Sir Henry Charles Burdett (18 March 1847 – 29 April 1920) was an English financier and philanthropist. Biography He was born at Broughton, Northamptonshire, the son of the Reverend Halford Burdett, a Leicestershire clergyman, and his wife Alsina. In 1863 he started his business career as a bank clerk in Birmingham, and was soon in charge of the local clearing at the Bank of England, where his business abilities became evident. In 1868 Burdett became secretary and general superintendent of the Queen's Hospital, Birmingham. In 1873 he enrolled there as a medical student, transferring later to Guy's Hospital, London. Later, between 1874 and 1880 he was secretary to the Dreadnought Seaman's Hospital. In 1880 he became secretary to the share and loan department of the London Stock Exchange and also a member of the committee of management of the Seamen's Hospital Society. Arthur Stanley (politician)
Sir Arthur Stanley (18 November 1869 – 4 November 1947) was a British Conservative politician, humanitarian, and Chairman of the Joint War Organisation of the British Red Cross Society and the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem in England during World War I and World War II. Biography Arthur Stanley was born on 18 November 1869, the third son of Lord Frederick Stanley (later 16th Earl of Derby) and Lady Constance Villiers (later Countess of Derby). He was one of ten siblings, though two did not survive childhood: his twin brother, Geoffrey, died on 16 March 1871 and his sister, Katherine Mary, died later that same year on 21 October. He relocated to Canada with his family after his father was appointed Governor General of Canada in 1888 and became an avid ice hockey player. He was a member of the Rideau Hall Rebels, one of the first ice hockey teams in Canada, and played alongside his older brother Edward (later 17th Earl of Derby). Bernard Docker
Sir Bernard Dudley Frank Docker (9 August 1896 – 22 May 1978) was an English industrialist. Born in Edgbaston, Birmingham, he was the only child of Frank Dudley Docker, an English businessman and financier. Career Docker was the managing director of the Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) group of companies from the early 1940s until 1956. He also chaired The Daimler Company Limited and the Anglo-Argentine Tramways Company. He was awarded a knighthood in 1938 for his ‘energetic work during twelve years as the Chairman of Westminster Hospital.’ He was succeeded by Jack Sangster as Chairman of BSA, following a 1956 boardroom coup.
