Highway 8, known as the ''Nicola Highway'', is an alternate route to Highway 97C between Highway 1 and the Coquihalla Highway (Highway 5) in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District. Highway 8 was first numbered in 1953, and very little about the highway changed between that year and 2021, when large segments of the highway were washed out by floods. Highway 8 follows the Nicola River for between Spences Bridge, on Highway 1, to Merritt on Highway 5. History Highway 8 is part of the first automobile route built to connect the Lower Mainland to the Alberta border. Named the ''Southern Trans-Provincial Highway'', it ran from Vancouver to Crowsnest Pass and was later designated as ''Route A;'' the route followed Kingsway and Yale Road from Vancouver to Hope, then turned north to Spences Bridge. Spences Bridge is a community in the Canadian province of British Columbia, situated north east of Lytton and south of Ashcroft. At Spences Bridge the Trans-Canada Highway crosses the Thompson River. In 1892, Spences Bridge's population included 32 people of European ancestry and 130 First Nations people. There were five general stores, three hotels, one Church of England and one school. The principal industries are fruit growing and farming. The population as of the 2021 Canadian census was 76, a decrease of 23.2 per cent from the 2016 count of 99. History The Kettle Valley Railway included a spur line stretching from Merritt to Spences Bridge. The rail bed is still intact, along with the original bridges. This settlement was originally known as Cook's Ferry because from 1862 to 1866 Mortimer Cook operated a ferry for crossing the river. British Columbia Highway 97
Highway 97 is a major highway in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It is the longest continuously numbered route in the province, running and is the only route that runs the entire north–south length of the British Columbia, connecting the Canada–United States border near Osoyoos in the south to the British Columbia–Yukon boundary in the north at Watson Lake, Yukon. Allison Pass (el. ) is a highway summit along the Crowsnest Highway in British Columbia, Canada. It is the highest point on the highway between the cities of Hope and Princeton. It is located in the middle of Manning Park, at the divide between the Skagit & Similkameen River drainages (and thus the watersheds of the Salish Sea and the Columbia River), as well as on the boundary between the Fraser Valley and Okanagan-Similkameen Regional Districts, approximately west of the Manning Resort and from Hope. David Rumsey Historical Map Collection
The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection is a large private map collection with over 150,000 maps and cartographic items. The collection was created by David Rumsey who, after making his fortune in real estate, focused initially on collecting 18th- and 19th century maps of North and South America, as this era "saw the rise of modern cartography." After 2004 Rumsey expanded the collection to include maps from the 16th though 21st centuries, covering more of the world. Osoyoos
Osoyoos (, ) is the southernmost town in the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia between Penticton and Omak. The town is north of the United States border with Washington state and is adjacent to the Osoyoos Indian reserve. The origin of the name Osoyoos was the word ''sw̓iw̓s'' (pronounced "soo-yoos") meaning "narrowing of the waters" in the local Okanagan language (''Syilx'tsn''). British Columbia Highway 3, officially named the Crowsnest Highway, is an highway that traverses southern British Columbia, Canada. It runs from the Trans-Canada Highway ( Highway 1) at Hope to Crowsnest Pass at the Alberta border and forms the western portion of the interprovincial Crowsnest Highway that runs from Hope to Medicine Hat, Alberta.
