The British Columbia Derby is a Canadian Thoroughbred horse race run annually during the third week of September at Hastings Racecourse (formerly Exhibition Park) in Vancouver, British Columbia. History Prior to 1961 (with the exception of 1949 and 1956), the BC Derby was run at Lansdowne Park Racetrack in Richmond, British Columbia. Open to three-year-old horses, the Grade III is run on dirt at a distance of miles (9 furlongs) and currently offers a purse of $114,960, the richest and most important race at Hastings Racecourse. Hastings Racecourse
Hastings Racecourse and Casino has been capturing the hearts and minds of visitors since 1889, featuring live thoroughbred racing, nearly 450 slots, dining, and more. A horse-racing facility and casino at Hastings Park, four miles from downtown Vancouver. George Royal
George Royal (1961–1981) was a Canadian Hall of Fame Thoroughbred racehorse. Background George Royal was a bay horse foaled in Cloverdale, British Columbia. He was sired by Dark Hawk out of the mare Polly Bashaw. His great-grandsire was Hyperion, son of the English Triple Crown Champion Gainsborough. He was originally owned by Robert Hall and Ernie Hammond and trained by Robert W. Hall. Racing career The colt began racing at two at Vancouver's Exhibition Park, winning four of his eight starts. Although a winner of nine consecutive stakes races at age three, he received little notice in Canada in 1964 as a result of Northern Dancer becoming the first Canadian-bred to win the Kentucky Derby. Travelling Victor (1979–1992) was a Canadian Thoroughbred Champion racehorse bred by Russell and Lois Bennett at their Flying Horse Farm in Westbank, British Columbia. In 1983, the horse made history when he became the first horse ever to be voted Canadian Horse of the Year honours who had not competed in the Province of Ontario. Regal Intention (1985–2008) is a Canadian Champion Thoroughbred racehorse. Background A grandson of Northern Dancer, he was out of the mare, Tiffany Tam and sired by the important Vice Regent who also sired his stablemate and arch rival, Regal Classic. Regal Intention was owned and bred by Sam-Son Farm and trained by James E. Day, a former Olympic equestrian show jumping Gold medallist. Racing career Based at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, at age two the colt made eight starts, winning three including the Kingarvie Stakes. Chris Loseth
Chris Loseth (born 1955 in Banff, Alberta) is a Canadian Thoroughbred horse racing jockey. At age six, Loseth's family moved to Fort Nelson, British Columbia then in the year before he graduated high school they resettled in Grand Forks. As a boy he was inspired by the success of the great Alberta jockey, Johnny Longden. After finishing high school, in 1974 Loseth began an apprenticeship at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver, British Columbia that saw him go on to compete in more than 26,000 races. He retired on June 12, 2005 having won more races and stakes events than any other jockey in the one hundred and sixteen year history of Hastings Racecourse. Gary Baze
Gary Baze (born October 25, 1955 in Sunnyside, Washington) is an American Thoroughbred horse racing jockey. An inductee of the Washington State Racing Hall of Fame, his Hall of Fame profile says of him: "As much as anything, Baze is respected throughout the industry for his honesty, courtesy, sportsmanship and work ethic." A member of the renowned Baze racing family, his father, Carl Albert Baze, was a trainer in Washington State for many years.
