British Academy Of Fencing
The British Academy of Fencing (BAF) is a membership organisation for those involved in coaching and coach education in the sport of fencing in the United Kingdom. The Academy claims to trace its roots to the reign of Henry VII and the Company of Masters of the Science of Defence, and was established in 1949. The Academy provides a comprehensive programme of support and teaching for coaches, and maintains a structured set of qualifications in the tuition of the three weapons used in competitive fencing, including basic, intermediate, advanced and diploma awards. As qualifications are attained, members are entitled to use a range of titles such as Provost, Maître d’Escrime, and Master. In addition, full masters of all three weapons adopt the title Professor. Edgar Seligman
Edgar Isaac Seligman (14 April 1867 – 27 September 1958) was a British épée, foil, and sabre fencer. After the family moved to London he became a British citizen by naturalisation. Seligman competed in five Olympiads and won two silver medals as a member of the British fencing team despite not making his Olympic debut until age 39. At the British Fencing Championships, he won all of the divisions two times, making him the only competitor to accomplish this, although (Bill Hoskyns has more combined titles). Early and personal life Seligman was born in San Francisco, California, in the United States, to German parents, and was Jewish. His father was Leopold Seligman. British Fencing Association
British Fencing (BF), formerly the British Fencing Association is the national governing body (NGB) for the Olympic sport of fencing in the British Isles (excluding the Republic of Ireland). History In 1902, the Amateur Fencing Association (AFA) was founded as the governing body for amateur fencing in the UK. The requirements for amateurism have now been dissolved, and professionalism is permitted in the UK, so in 1996 the name was changed to the British Fencing Association. (A membership body for professional fencing coaches, the British Academy of Fencing, was not founded in its current form until 1949). UK Coaching is the professional association for sports coaches in the United Kingdom. It is a sports development charitable foundation. History Until recently it was known as sports coach UK. Previously it was called the National Coaching Foundation (NCF), founded in 1983. Its motto was ''Better Coaching..... Better Sport''. It was incorporated as a company on 23 January 1987. Origination It was first sited at Leeds Polytechnic. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service.
