Brigida Lorenzani (1804, Brescello, Emilia-Romagna – 9 March 1881, Lucca) was an Italian operatic contralto. She was also known as Brigida Lorenzani Nerici. Michele Ridolfi
Selfportrait Michele Ridolfi (Gragnano, September 29, 1793 – Lucca, November 1, 1854) was an Italian painter and art critic. Biography He was a pupil of Stefano Tofanelli in Lucca. He specialized in painting with encaustic, and painted the walls of the apse of Sant Alessandro in Lucca. He moved to Rome in 1813 to study with various artists, including a colony of German artists, principally Peter von Cornelius and Johann Friedrich Overbeck. His ''First Council of the Apostles under the Presidency of St. Peter'' was painted in Rome. His ''Enthroned Madonna'' received two gold medals and a crown of laurel from the Pope. He restored Amico Aspertini's frescoes in the Basilica di San Frediano at Lucca with great skill. Ridolfi was an honorary member of the Dresden Academy. Giuseppe Saverio Raffaele Mercadante (baptised 17 September 179517 December 1870) was an Italian composer, particularly of operas. While Mercadante may not have retained the international celebrity of Gaetano Donizetti or Gioachino Rossini beyond his own lifetime, he composed as prolific a number of works as either; and his development of operatic structures, melodic styles and orchestration contributed significantly to the foundations upon which Giuseppe Verdi built his dramatic technique. Biography Early years Mercadante was born illegitimate in Altamura, near Bari in Apulia; his precise date of birth has not been recorded, but he was baptised on 17 September 1795. ''Elvida'' is a ''melodramma'' or opera in one act by Gaetano Donizetti. Giovanni Schmidt wrote the Italian libretto. The opera was written as a ''pièce d'occasion'' for the birthday of María Isabella of Spain, Queen Maria of the Two Sicilies. The choice of subject matter was no doubt intended as an elegant acknowledgement of the Queen's Spanish ancestry. Donizetti received little financial reward for the work and, as a result, put the minimum of effort into its composition.
