Brighton Mile
The Brighton Mile was an American Thoroughbred horse race run between 1905 and 1910 at Brighton Beach Race Course in Brighton Beach, Coney Island, New York. A handicap event for horses age three and older, it was contested on dirt at a distance of one mile (8 furlongs). Inaugurated in 1905, the Brighton Mile was not run in 1908 and 1909 due to passage of the Hart–Agnew Law. That would turn out to be the last time the event was run as further restrictions were enacted by the New York State Legislature through amendments to the Hart–Agnew Law that shut down all racing in New York in 1911 and 1912 and ended horse racing permanently at the Brighton Beach track. A final edition of the Brighton Mile was run at Empire City Race Track in Yonkers, New York and was won by Sam Hildreth's King James. Brighton Beach Race Course
The Brighton Beach Race Course was an American Thoroughbred horse racing facility in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, New York (state), New York, opened on June 28, 1879 by the Brighton Beach Racing Association. Headed by real estate developer William A. Engeman, who owned the Brighton Beach Hotel, the one-mile race track was located in back of the hotel and bounded by Ocean Parkway (Brooklyn), Ocean Parkway on the west, Neptune Avenue on the north, Coney Island Avenue on the east, and Brighton Beach Avenue on the south. An instant success, the race track drew wealthy patrons from New York City, and harness racing was introduced there in 1901. Among its most important Thoroughbred horse racing events were the Brighton Derby for three-year-olds and the Brighton Handicap that was open to older horses. On July 17, 1900, James R. Ort Wells
Ort Wells (foaled 1901) was an American Thoroughbred two-time Champion racehorse. Background Ort Wells was bred by Col. Kinzea Stone of Scott County, Kentucky. He was sired by Withers Stakes winner King Eric and out of the mare Tea's Over, a daughter of U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee, Hanover. Racing career Trained by Enoch Wishard for owner John Drake, Ort Wells was selected the retrospective American Champion Three-Year-Old Male Horse of 1904 when his wins included the Brighton Derby. He followed up the next year with performances that saw him named American Champion Older Male Horse of 1905. Sydney Paget
Sydney Augustus Paget (19 April 1857 – 16 September 1916) was an English aristocrat who owned and raced Thoroughbred racehorses in the United States and who managed the racing operations for prominent owners, William C. Whitney and James Ben Ali Haggin. Background Sydney Paget was the fifth son and twelfth child of Cecilia Wyndham and her husband, Lord Alfred Paget. Army Sydney Paget served with the British Army in the Second Boer War, achieving the rank of Lieutenant with the machine gun section of the XIIth Yeomanry. Horse racing and management Paget's brother, Almeric, married Pauline Payne Whitney, daughter of the enormously wealthy William C. Whitney who hired Sydney Paget to manage his New York Thoroughbred racing stable. Paget ran a ranch at Big Horn, Wyoming for William Whitney where he raised Thoroughbreds on the open range. Walter Miller (jockey)
Walter Miller (1890–1959) was an American jockey. Miller was born in Brooklyn, New York. He rode in his first race at age 14. At the age of 16, he won 388 races, a record not broken until Anthony DeSpirito did it in 1952. Between the years 1905 and 1908 Miller won 1,094 races from 4,336 mounts for an extraordinary 25.2 winning percentage. He led the U.S. in victories in both 1906 and 1907. In 1906, he won the Preakness on Whimsical. He also won the Travers Stakes, Alabama Stakes, Champagne Stakes, Saratoga Special Stakes, and Brooklyn Handicap. He was the United States National Riding Champion in 1906 and 1907. In his career, more than half the time his horse finished "in the money". On July 29, 1906, Walter Miller rode five winners on a single racecard at Brighton Beach Race Course. He set a record by riding eight consecutive winners, over a two-day period at Benning Race Track. Willie Knapp
William J. Knapp (August 21, 1888 – October 26, 1972) was an American thoroughbred horse racing Hall of Fame jockey. He was known for racing horses such as Exterminator and Sun Briar. He became the jockey for Exterminator in the 1918 Kentucky Derby. He was expecting to race Sun Briar, an extremely fast colt, but Sun Briar became ill and he had no choice but to race Exterminator, Sun Briar's training horse. However, Exterminator won the Derby and Knapp became his lifelong jockey. Knapp is also well remembered as the jockey aboard the aptly named Upset on August 13, 1919, when he handed the legendary Man o' War his only defeat in the Sanford Memorial Stakes. Among his many success as a jockey, during a period of less than a month in 1907 Knapp guided Charles Edward to three track records including a World record.
