Brigham (film)
''Brigham'' is a 1977 American film which is a biopic of American religious figure Brigham Young, directed by Samuel Bronston from a script by Philip Yordan. The film starred Maurice Grandmaison as Brigham Young, and Richard Moll as Joseph Smith. In a 1988 interview, Yordan recalled he had written the film for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In fact, the film was not commissioned or funded by the Church, but produced independently by Church member David Yeaman and released by Sunset Films. The movie was released in 1977 and was poorly received. It was re-released as ''The New Brigham'', and again in 1983 as ''Savage Journey''. Brigham Young
Brigham Young (; June 1, 1801August 29, 1877) was an American religious leader and politician. He was the second President of the Church (LDS Church), president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), from 1847 until his death in 1877. During his time as church president, Young led his followers, the Mormon pioneers, west from Nauvoo, Illinois, to the Salt Lake Valley. He founded Salt Lake City and served as the first governor of the Utah Territory. Young also worked to establish the learning institutions which would later become the University of Utah and Brigham Young University. Samuel Bronston
Samuel Bronston (March 26, 1908 – January 12, 1994) was a Bessarabian-born American film producer, film director, and a nephew of socialist revolutionary figure, Leon Trotsky. He was also the petitioner in a U.S. Supreme Court case that set a major precedent for perjury prosecutions when it overturned his conviction. Biography Bronston was born in Kishinev, Bessarabia, Russian Empire (present day Moldova) and educated at the Sorbonne. He worked for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's French unit in Paris before setting up as an independent film producer by the 1940s. Early films Bronston produced two films for Columbia Pictures '' The Adventures of Martin Eden'' (1942) and '' City Without Men'' (1943). Philip Yordan
Philip Yordan (April 1, 1914 – March 24, 2003) was an American screenwriter of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s who produced several films. He acted as a front for blacklisted writers although his use of surrogate screenwriters predates the McCarthy era. His actual contributions to the scripts he is credited with writing is controversial and he was known to some as a credit-grabber. Born to Polish immigrants, he earned degrees from both University of Illinois and Chicago-Kent College of Law.
