Geography Briggsville is located on the eastern side of Mason Lake. The Bonnie Oaks Historic District is a little over a mile to the east. Mason Lake (Wisconsin)
Mason Lake is a natural elongated lake south of Belfair, Washington, United States in Mason County. Named for Charles H. Mason, the first secretary of Washington Territory, the lake is on the isthmus of the Kitsap Peninsula between the Hood Canal and Pickering Passage of the Case Inlet. The smaller Benson Lake is to its eastern side. Mason Lake is approximately 1000 acres in size and four miles long. Its maximum depth is 90 feet and the mean depth is 48 feet. With 10.9 miles of shoreline, the lake sits at 194 feet above sea level. More than a thousand residents live yearlong around the shores of Mason Lake, the second largest freshwater lake in Mason County, second to the man-made Lake Cushman to its northwest. Margery Latimer
Margery Bodine Latimer (February 6, 1899 – August 16, 1932), born in Portage, Wisconsin, was an American writer, feminist theorist, and social activist. She moved to New York City before finishing college and became involved in its cultural life. Latimer published two highly acclaimed novels, '' We Are Incredible'' (1928) and ''This is My Body'' (1930), and two collections of short stories, ''Nellie Bloom and Other Stories'' (1929), and ''Guardian Angel and Other Stories'' (1932). (This was reprinted in a new edition in 1984.) Her formally experimental fiction was greatly influenced by the modernism of the 1920s. Reviewers of the period compared her to Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, and D. H. Lawrence. Her work reflects her feminist, socialist, and anti-racist ideals. Bonnie Oaks Historic District
The Bonnie Oaks Historic District is located in Briggsville, Wisconsin in the Town of Douglas. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 3, 1986. History The Bonnie Oaks Historic District consists of fifteen structures and one archaeological site. All of the buildings were built between 1870 and 1930. Literature and Music The site has significance in the fields of literature and music for the role it played as an informal artists' retreat. The original owner of the site was Cyrus Woodman, who obtained it in 1853 as a military land warrant from the federal government. After going through a few owners, the property eventually passed to Alma and John Ormsby. Alma gave it the title of Bonnie Oaks and John built many of the structures that are currently on the property. State Trunk Highway 23 (often called Highway 23, STH-23 or WIS 23) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The route is signed as a north–south route from Shullsburg to Wisconsin Dells and as an east–west route from Wisconsin Dells to Sheboygan.
