Thicket
A thicket is a very dense stand of trees or tall shrubs, often dominated by only one or a few species, to the exclusion of all others. They may be formed by species that shed large numbers of highly viable seeds that are able to germinate in the shelter of the maternal plants. Thicket is used for tobacco pipes as it doesn't catch fire when burning tobacco. In some conditions, the formation or spread of thickets may be assisted by human disturbance of an area. Where a thicket is formed of briar (also spelled brier), which is a common name for any of a number of unrelated thorny plants, it may be called a briar patch. The Briars (Georgina)
The Briars is an Ontario lakeside resort located in the Jackson's Point area of Georgina, Ontario. Portions of the resort are protected by an Ontario Heritage Trust conservation easement. The Manor House and the Peacock House are the protected sections; this excludes the rear (west) elevation and the landscaped grounds to the east of the Manor House. History The Manor House is a two-story rubblestone structure was built as a homestead in 1840 by Captain William Bourchier. The property was named The Briars by Captain William Bourchier (pronounced bow-cher), R.N. due to his fondness for the Briars, Saint Helena. Captain Bourchier came to Canada to serve on the Great Lakes, to command a frigate being built in Penetanguishene. When the armistice ending the War of 1812 was signed in 1815, his ship was not completed and never saw service. Bourchier applied for a land grant and later returned to Canada in 1818. Briar is an open-source software communication technology, intended to provide secure and resilient peer-to-peer communications with no centralized servers and minimal reliance on external infrastructure. Messages can be transmitted through Bluetooth, WiFi, over the internet via Tor or removable storage, such as USB sticks. All communication is end-to-end encrypted. Relevant content is stored in encrypted form on participating devices. Long-term plans for the project include support for distributed applications such as crisis mapping and collaborative document editing. The initial target audience for Briar includes "activists, journalists and civil society" with plans to make the system "simple enough to help anyone keep their data safe." The Tim Hortons Brier, or simply (and more commonly) the Brier (''french: Le Brier''), is the annual Canadian men's curling championship, sanctioned by Curling Canada. The current event name refers to its main sponsor, the Tim Hortons coffee and donut shop chain. The Briars is a heritage-listed residence located at 14 Woonona Avenue, in the Sydney suburb of Wahroonga in the Ku-ring-gai Council local government area of New South Wales, Australia. It was designed by Charles H. Halstead. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. The Briars is a historic house in Natchez, Mississippi, USA. It was built in 1818 for a large planter. Varina Davis, the First Lady of the Confederate States of America, spent her adolescence in the house. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. History The land was granted by Spain to Richard Bacon in 1784; it was purchased by Arthur Mahan in 1814. The house was built in 1818 for Judge John Perkins, a large planter. It was designed by architect Levi Weeks. When his wife died in 1824, Perkins tried to sell the house, but he rented it to William Burr Howell, the son of New Jersey Governor Richard Howell, from 1828 to 1850 instead. Howell's daughter, Varina Howell, grew up at the house as a teenager; she later married Jefferson Davis and served as the First Lady of the Confederacy. Briars, Saint Helena
Briars is the name of the small pavilion in which Napoleon Bonaparte stayed for the first few weeks of his exile on Saint Helena in late 1815 before being moved to Longwood House. The pavilion was in the garden of William Balcombe, an English merchant who became a purveyor to Napoleon. His 14-year-old daughter Elizabeth Lucia ("Betsy") Balcombe was the only family member who spoke French and she became the family translator. Because of his family's closeness to Napoleon, Balcombe attracted the suspicion of Governor Hudson Lowe, and in 1818 he was forced to leave the island and return to England. The Briars was then used as the home for the Admiral assigned to St Helena.
