Brian Walsh (footballer, Born 1934)
Brian J. Walsh (25 October 1934 – 20 August 2010) was an Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Walsh started his career as a centreman, with Ormond Amateurs, in the Victorian Amateur Football Association. He was recruited to the VFL by St Kilda coach Alan Killigrew, who had coached Walsh when he was a junior with CBC St Kilda. At St Kilda he played in the back pocket, forming a strong defence, which had two Brownlow Medal winners, Neil Roberts and Verdun Howell. Roberts has been quoted saying Walsh was the best player in the back six. His 131 league games, between 1956 and 1964, included two finals. Walsh didn't kick a goal for St Kilda, although he did manage a goal for an opposition team. The goal came when St Kilda were playing Carlton at Junction Oval, in the fourth round of the 1958 season. Ormond Amateur Football Club
Ormond Amateur Football Club is an Australian rules football club, located 14 km south east of Melbourne in the suburb of Ormond. Ormond is the second-oldest suburban club in the Victorian Amateur Football Association. The club was founded in 1931 by Leslie Edward Smith. In 2008 Ormond welcomed back recently retired AFL player Matthew Robbins as player and assistant coach. After competing in B grade in season 2009, Ormond were narrowly relegated and subsequently moved down to C grade for 2010. Australian rules football was one of two demonstration sports at the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) stipulated that each Summer Olympics host must organise both a "national" game and a sport "foreign" to the organising country as "demonstration sports". Australian football was chosen as the national sport, while baseball was chosen as the foreign sport. In accordance with Olympic eligibility rules, participants were restricted to amateurs, which forced organisers to select squads made up of young stars, ageing veterans and suburban-league athletes. Cobram Football Club
The Cobram Football Club, nicknamed the ''Tigers'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based in the regional city of Cobram located in north east Victoria. Cobram teams currently compete in the Murray FNL. History Formed in 1887, Cobram began in the Goulburn Valley Football Association(GVFA) in 1888. The club also had short stints in the Murray Border Football Association and Federal District Football Association. Cobram FC also won two additional premierships in 1892 and 1893 as per a letter to the ''Cobram Courier'' by former player, Jack McNamara in 1903, who wrote that he had possession of the actual "Gedye's Victoria Hotel Cup" premiership cups. Doug Beasy
Douglas Edward Beasy (16 April 1930 – 12 May 2013) was an Australian rules footballer who played in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Beasy made his debut for the Carlton Football Club in the Round 1 of the 1951 season. He won Carlton's best and fairest award in 1956. He left the Blues at the end of the 1959 season. He was captain-coach of Victorian Football Association (VFA) club Box Hill from 1960 to 1962, winning the J. J. Liston Trophy as best and fairest player in the VFA in 1961. In all he played 49 games and scored 41 goals for Box Hill. He is the son of former Carlton player Maurie Beasy and the great-uncle of Hawthorn player Brendan Whitecross. Outside of football, Beasy was a primary teacher and later a school principal. 1958 VFL Season
The 1958 VFL season was the 62nd season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 12 April until 20 September, and comprised an 18-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Collingwood Football Club for the 13th time, after it defeated by 18 points in the 1958 VFL Grand Final. Premiership season In 1958, the VFL competition consisted of twelve teams of 18 on-the-field players each, plus two substitute players, known as the 19th man and the 20th man.
