Brian Pilkington (illustrator)
Brian Charles Pilkington (born 20 July 1950) is an English-born Icelandic illustrator and artist, best known for his illustrations of many Icelandic children's books since the 1980s. Pilkington has also illustrated other literature genres, including his own book of Icelandic fauna (''Dýraríki Íslands'' (1992)). Pilkington was born and raised in Liverpool, England, and graduated from the School of Arts of the University of Leicester. He moved to Iceland in 1974 where he soon found work in the advertising industry there. His first notable illustration work came about in 1981 when he was commissioned by the Icelandic author Guðrún Helgadóttir to illustrate her children's book ''Ástarsaga úr fjöllunum''. Pilkington has received several accolades for his work. In 1999 his book ''Allt um tröll'' (released in English as ''Icelandic Trolls'') was recognised by the Icelandic Tourism Board as the best idea for a souvenir from Iceland. Art has existed in Iceland since the first settlements, but it was only at the beginning of the 20th century that Icelandic artists came to an international reputation. Mostly, they had studied in other countries, e.g. in Denmark. The most important motifs for Icelandic painters were the nature of their home country and the human being, but they also used mythical and supernatural themes as well as socio-realistic motives. Around 1960 the Swiss-German artist Dieter Roth moved to Iceland. Gerður Kristný (born 1970) is an Icelandic writer who is best known for her poetry and books for children. Early life Gerður Kristný was born on 10 June 1970 and brought up in Reykjavík. She graduated in French and comparative literature from the University of Iceland in 1992 with a BA thesis on Charles Baudelaire’s '' Les Fleurs du Mal''. Before becoming a full-time writer, she trained at Danish Radio TV. Career Gerður Kristný was editor of the magazine ''Mannlíf'' from 1998–2004 and wrote numerous books for children, short stories, and poetry during the same time.
